UPDATE - CONTAINED

05/07/2026

Your Key Peninsula Fire Department responded to 212 calls during the month of April. 146 of those calls were medical in nature. 39 calls were fire related- either accidental trips from fire alarms or burn complaints or calls to illegal burning. Reminder that June 1st the burn ban will begin. For now, we are still issuing burn permits for piles 10 x 10 and it is still ok to burn as long as your pile is no bigger than a 4x4x6 and you are NOT burning stumps, limbs that are bigger than 4 inches in diameter or milled lumber. One should always have water standing by when burning and a shovel if possible.

April’s not even over, so why are we talking about a summer burn ban? 🔥

Because June 1 will be here before you know it. That’s when the Stage 1 burn ban takes effect in unincorporated Pierce County.

Now is a good time to finish yard cleanup and take care of any outdoor burning.

What’s not allowed starting June 1:
• Burning yard debris
• Burning for land clearing

What’s still allowed:
• Recreational fires in approved fire pits
• Barbecues (gas, wood, or charcoal)

Plan ahead to avoid last-minute burning and help protect our communities from wildfire risk.

Worth reading, new pilot program in place for the KP to enforce burning and firework laws.

A new program focuses on preventing illegal burning and enforcing firework restrictions. The Key Peninsula is concerning because of its isolation.

Heads Up! Be Prepared! Have a Safe and Merry Christmas!

There's wind alerts in Western Washington and Southeast Washington and winter weather advisories in Northeast Washington. Find your local forecast by adding your ZIP code at weather.gov. Highly saturated ground plus high winds can lead to more downed trees and power outages. So, please be prepared for that.

We're seeing a wind advisory and potential windstorm in Western Washington starting in some areas between 11 a.m. and noon and lasting until 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in some areas with widespread gusts in Western Washington above 40mph and the potential for scattered power outages and tree damage. The good news is that the wind threat today does not appear to be as strong as initially feared, but widespread gusty winds are still anticipated. The stronger winds appear to be headed to Oregon.

In Southeast Washington, there's a high wind warning in place with southeast winds 35 to 45 mph and gusts up to 75 mph.

Now's the time to charge your phones and devices. A charged backup battery pack can be a helpful item in the event of a power outage.

Identify a safe heat source, such as a fireplace, indoor portable heater, or wood-burning stove. It is not safe to use an outdoor gas-powered heater indoors as they pose a fire hazard and produce carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas. Make sure to stock up on extra blankets.

Use flashlights and battery powered devices, not candles.

If you have a generator, make sure it is properly wired to your home. Generator exhaust can cause carbon monoxide poisoning, so make sure it is away from your home. If you’re not sure how to properly use a generator, do not hesitate to contact the vendor. Store an extra supply of gas for your generator in an appropriate location.

Make sure your neighbors are aware of the situation. Not everyone around you may be in the know.

If you must travel during severe weather, let someone know where you are heading and what time you plan on arriving.
