Camp T on Birch Lake

Camp T on Birch Lake Camp T is a traditional day and overnight summer camp for youth ages 5 to 16. Located in Vandalia, MI Many of our counselors are former Tannadoonah campers!

Tannadoonah is located on 45 rolling acres above Birch Lake in Vandalia, Michigan (about 40 minutes from South Bend, IN). Campers live in rustic cabins in small groups with 2-3 counselors in each cabin. Activities include waterskiing, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, swimming, tennis, team building, outdoor cooking, drama, dance, photography, crafts, nature, sports & games, archery, jewelry making, yo

ga, and fishing. Plus we offer diving, science, soccer, basketball, volleyball, art, guitar, and CSI adventure programs during select weeks. Camp Tannadoonah is directed by Gabby Bittner, a former camper and counselor with over 10 years experience at Camp Tannadoonah. She holds a bachelor's degree in Psychology from Purdue University. With up to 150 campers per week, and 26 full time counselors, we offer a ratio of 5:1 or better at all times. Counselors are college-age and approximately half of the staff returns each summer. We have a registered nurse on site at all times, and all of the counselors are Red Cross certified in CPR and First Aid. We offer 3-day, 7-day, and 11-day overnight and day camp sessions. Each of the 8 sessions at Camp Tannadoonah has a theme. The themes are used to develop special evening activities, decorations for the dining hall and cabins, and meals. However, the themes do not change the normal daily activities offered to campers.

The perfect follow up to our recent blog about helping first time campers prepare! Michael Thompson is the author of the book we recommended in our March newsletter, too!

Do you have a child heading off to overnight camp this summer? Are they nervous? Maybe, deep down, are you nervous, too? Join Tom Holland of Wilderness Adventures and New York Times bestselling author Michael Thompson for an honest conversation about why time away from home can be one of the most important catalysts for growth in a child’s life. Together, they’ll discuss homesickness, independence, resilience, and how parents can thoughtfully navigate the emotions that come with letting go.

Attendance is FREE and all are welcome.

Monday, May 4th at 8pm EDT.

I've been a part of Camp T since 1976. No, that's not a typo - 50 years! I started as a camper in 1976 in Cardinals and Wrens. At that time, Camp T was only for girls. I moved up to Wallace (the OLD Wallace that doesn't exist anymore) the next time I came in 1980. By 1981, I was in Morris and there were boys at camp as well. My next Camp T interaction was when my daughter started coming as a camper in 2012. She spent time at camp every summer from then until 2024, going for camper to CIT to counsellor, to waterfront director (can you guess who my daughter is?). I've been working as one of the many camp nurses since 2015 or 16 (usually during Super Week), including spending the entire summer there in 2020 as the "Covid Nurse". I love Camp T - the smell of the freshly mowed grass, the sounds of laughter in the sports and games field, the waterfront... Mostly, I love watching the kids realize there is more to life than electronics and watching them grow. One of the best things about being at camp year after year is getting to see the kids change from the scared little Spark starting their first overnight camp and growing into the "big kids" starting to lead those Sparks
