My latest button acquisition from one of my favorite Studio Designers, Lili Cantelmi. This beautiful bead embroidered paisley button was made with various sizes of Miyuki seed beads, Gem Duos, and a Czech glass flower bead. The beads were stitched onto a fabric beading foundation, and the back is finished with an ultra suede fabric and a sterling silver shank. Such beautiful workmanship, I love it!

Sometimes you go through a box of old metal buttons you picked up at a garage sale and something tells you to look at one a little closer. I first looked up the meaning of the words and found “Art for the sake of Art” which was the motto of Louis B. Mayer, founder of MGM. Then I looked up the Lion. MGM used 7 different lions. This one is Slats, the first one, dating 1924-1928, and the only silent one. Then, the backmark of the Steiner Uniform Co. who provided uniforms to MGM. Put all of this together and I can substantiate that I have an actual uniform button worn in the mid to late 1920’s at MGM. There is still thread on the shank! Online research seems to think it might be worth a little something. Would be fun to know, but Slats is mine!

Get out your magnifying glasses! Let’s take you back to National and an award that ONLY our own Barbara Smith of the Polk Box Button Club entered! Let’s take those little darlings the Diminutives! Now don’t stop there, let’s make them pictorial, but also make sure they follow Sections 17, 18, 19, & 20. We were amazed! She was awarded a Merit Ribbon which was certainly hard earned! More congratulations to Barbara!

Our own Barbara Smith of the Polk Box Button Club brought home a First Place Ribbon from National in C & C Glass Paperweights, no limit on studios. (Not happy with the glare on my photo!) These paperweights are gorgeous, each by a different artist, each more beautiful than the next. We are very proud of her as we are sure there was some intense competition! Barbara had a great time at National and gave a great report of all of the happenings at our last Meeting. She brought all of us a grab bag button that was a lot of fun opening and seeing what each of us received.

Sometimes you just need a skeleton button actually carved from bone! I loved it and had to have it!!!
