NAMI Southwest Washington

NAMI Southwest Washington NAMI Southwest Washington is dedicated to all people affected by mental illness through education Each state also has a state organization.

We are dedicated to helping all individuals and families struggling with mental health challenges through education, support, advocacy, and awareness. We provide unique mental health services that otherwise are unavailable or inaccessible for many individuals and families. All of our services are offered at no charge and are confidential. NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the large

st grassroots mental health organization in the nation, headquartered in Virginia. Communities or counties within the states have affiliate organizations. Many affiliates work under their own independent non-profit charter. NAMI SW WA was first chartered in the late 1970's. We Believe That:
• People can learn to manage their mental health diagnosis and can and will take responsibility for their recovery
• People with a mental health diagnosis are entitled to live the highest quality of life possible, in their own communities of choice
• Family and social support are essential for recovery
• Family members can learn how to cope and determine
how best to take care of themselves

NAMI advocates for access to mental health services, treatment, and support; we are steadfast in commitment to raising awareness and building a supportive community for individuals and they families who are affected by mental illness.

Talking openly about mental illness helps create safer, more compassionate communities. When we treat mental health as a real health issue, not a moral failing, we make it easier for survivors to feel seen, supported, and less alone.

Stigma can keep people silent for far too long. Honest conversations can help change that. The more we lead with understanding instead of judgment, the more room we create for healing, connection, and hope.

Ending the Silence is one of the ways we help bring honest, compassionate mental health education into schools. This free 50-minute presentation is designed for high school students and gives them the chance to learn about mental illness directly from individuals and family members with lived experience.

This presentation opens the door for real conversation and reminds students that recovery is possible and support is available.

Jessica’s quote is a powerful reminder that the effects of childhood trauma can last long after the moment has passed, but they do not have to define a person’s future. Fear may have been learned early, but healing can help create space for safety, strength, and a different path forward.

For survivors of childhood violence, healing is often not quick or linear. It takes support, compassion, and time. This PTSD Awareness Month, we want to remind anyone carrying the weight of early trauma that you are not alone, and that healing is possible.

No one should be made to feel invisible in their pain, their struggle, or their need for connection. Healing a community starts with seeing people, listening to them, and creating spaces where they know they matter.

At NAMI Southwest Washington, that is the work we are committed to every day, reducing stigma, building belonging, and helping people feel less alone. Change does not happen all at once, but it does happen one conversation, one connection, and one person at a time.

June is Men’s Health Month, a reminder that physical and mental health both matter. Too often, men are encouraged to push through stress, stay silent, or wait until things feel serious before reaching out.

This month, we encourage the men in our community to check in with themselves and with one another. A conversation, a doctor’s appointment, a support group, or one honest moment can make a real difference! Find an upcoming support group here: https://namiswwa.org/calendar/

Taking care of your mental health is important for everyone, and for many LGBTQIA+ people, that care can also mean protecting your peace in a world that is not always affirming.

A few gentle reminders this Pride Month, stay connected with people who make you feel safe, take breaks from spaces that leave you feeling drained, and give yourself permission to rest when carrying too much.

Mental health support can also look like setting boundaries, limiting time with harmful conversations online or in person, and reaching out to trusted friends, community, or professional support when you need it. Caring for yourself is not selfish, it is part of protecting your well-being.
