Building independence starts with the little things.

Learning to manage medications, understand your health, and develop healthy routines are some of the most important skills a young person with kidney disease can build. These habits don’t just improve health today, they lay the foundation for a successful transition into adulthood.

At NW Kidney Connection, we believe that confidence and knowledge are just as important as medical care. That’s why we’re passionate about supporting young adults as they navigate life with kidney disease through peer support, education, and community.

We also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Northwest Kidney Kids for inviting us to be part of Youth Camp this year. It was an honor to spend the week with such incredible campers, families, volunteers, and medical staff. We’re grateful for the opportunity to partner together in empowering the next generation of kidney warriors.

Here’s to building confidence, independence, and brighter futures—one small habit at a time. 💚

One year ago today, NW Kidney Connection officially became a reality.

When I started this organization, it wasn’t because I thought I had all the answers. It was because I knew what it felt like to be scared, overwhelmed, and alone while living with kidney disease. I knew there had to be a place where young adults could find people who truly understood what they were going through.

This year has been filled with milestones I once only dreamed about. We’ve built programs, welcomed volunteers, formed partnerships, and most importantly, we’ve begun creating a community where kidney patients and their families know they don’t have to face this journey alone.

On a personal level, this organization means more to me than I can put into words. As someone who was born with kidney disease, spent years navigating hospitals, received the gift of a kidney transplant, and has experienced both the victories and the setbacks that come with this life, every conversation, every event, and every person we’ve been able to support reminds me why this mission matters.

There were moments this year when the work felt overwhelming. There were late nights, difficult decisions, and times I wondered if we could keep moving forward. But every time someone shared that they finally felt understood, found hope, or made a meaningful connection, it reminded me exactly why we started.

This anniversary doesn’t belong to me alone. It belongs to every patient who trusted us with their story, every family member who stood beside a loved one, every volunteer who gave their time, every board member who believed in this vision, every healthcare professional who partnered with us, and every donor who made this work possible.

Thank you for believing that young adults living with kidney disease deserve a community built just for them.

We’re only one year in, and I truly believe we’re just getting started.

Here’s to the lives we’ve touched, the friendships we’ve built, and the many more people we’ll serve together in the years ahead.

With gratitude,

Dakota Watson
