🎳 "It's just bowling." ...Or is it?

We hear this all the time. How can participants work on goals while bowling?

At first glance, it looks like a group of people getting together to bowl, laugh, eat lunch, and have fun.

And honestly...it is. ❤️

But if you look a little closer, you'll see something much bigger happening.

One of the questions we get asked most is:

"Can someone receiving Community Engagement services attend a Community Respite activity?"

Absolutely! As long as the respite activity supports that person's individual goals, Community Engagement participants can join in with the appropriate staffing and supports.

What most people don't realize is that a simple, fun activity like bowling can help someone work toward goals such as:

🎳 Socialization and building friendships
💬 Initiating and maintaining two-way conversations
🗣️ Communication skills
🤝 Turn taking and following group rules
🏆 Sportsmanship and appropriate responses to winning and losing
🌎 Community participation and inclusion
❤️ Building natural supports and peer relationships
💵 Budgeting and money management
💳 Practicing real-life transactions (paying for bowling, shoes, food, lunch, etc.)
🧠 Decision-making and problem-solving
⏰ Time management and punctuality
🙋 Self-advocacy and communicating wants and needs
🌟 Increasing independence in community settings
📋 Following multi-step directions and routines
💛 Emotional regulation and frustration tolerance
⌛ Patience while waiting for turns
😊 Appropriate behavior in public settings
✨ Building confidence and self-esteem
🎯 Developing healthy leisure and recreation skills
🎨 Exploring new interests and hobbies
🎳 Fine motor and gross motor skill development
👀 Hand-eye coordination, balance, and coordination
💪 Physical activity and overall wellness
🚦 Safety awareness in community environments
🔄 Flexibility and adapting to unexpected changes
🌱 Developing routine and consistency in community activities

The beauty of Community Engagement is that growth doesn't have to happen sitting at a table or in a classroom.

Sometimes it happens while celebrating a strike.
Sometimes it happens while waiting patiently for your turn.
Sometimes it happens while ordering lunch, encouraging a friend, or trying something new.

So...is it just bowling?

We don't think so. 💙

At iEmbrace, we believe everyday experiences can become meaningful opportunities to build confidence, independence, and lifelong skills.
