In Washington, 53% of youth who had been in foster care graduated from high school on time in the four-year cohort we reviewed, compared with 84% of students statewide.

That difference is more than a statistic.

Behind the number are young people navigating school while also experiencing transitions, uncertainty, and circumstances many of their classmates never have to manage.

By age 23 or 24, 81.2% of the young men reported having been arrested at least once. This statistic represents arrest history, not incarceration.

These are findings from a specific longitudinal study, not predictions for individual children.
