Just one week after he was born, Sunday became an orphan. His grandmother, Janifer, stepped in as his caregiver, becoming the only mother figure he knows.

But Janifer is facing this responsibility with physical limitations, economic hardship, and the deep trauma left behind by domestic violence.

This happened just before Ourganda’s prevention program expanded into their village.

And this is exactly the kind of tragedy our community-based domestic violence prevention and response programs are now working to stop in remote Ugandan villages.

A mother should not have to give birth without sterile supplies.

In some remote Ugandan villages, access to basic medical supplies is not always guaranteed, and during childbirth, that matters.
Sterile gloves, clean cutting tools, cord ties, and basic sanitation materials may seem simple, but they can help reduce the risk of infection for both mother and baby during one of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.

This is why maternal health in rural Uganda is not just about hospitals. It is also about access, preparation, safe birth supplies, and care that can reach remote communities before a crisis becomes even more dangerous.

At Ourganda, the work is focused on practical support for remote Ugandan villages, including medical access, prevention-based care, and resources that help protect mothers, children, and families on the ground.

Many have reached out with questions after seeing headlines about the Bundibugyo Ebola virus outbreak in Central Africa.

We want to share information and reassure our supporters:

- The current Ebola outbreak is centered in Ituri Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)

- Ituri Province is approximately 300 km from Bundibugyo District, Uganda

- Ourganda’s team reports there have been no reported Ebola cases in or near Bundibugyo District, where we serve.

Our staff, medical workers, and the communities we serve remain safe at this time. Our team is vigilant, informed, and taking every precaution to help protect the men, women, and children in our villages.

Please continue praying for everyone directly affected by the Ebola outbreak, for grieving families, and for the healthcare professionals working tirelessly to contain the virus.

What happens when police cannot reach a remote village quickly?

What if no one steps in?
What if it gets worse?

In remote Ugandan villages, protection often has to look different. Formal systems may be too far away, too delayed, or too difficult to access in the moment help is needed.

That is why the village still needs a response system.

In the villages Ourganda serves, domestic violence is not treated as something to stay hidden behind closed doors. It is met with a local response and a community that understands silence cannot be the only option.

Ourganda helps support the people and systems on the ground that make this kind of response possible for women, children, and families in remote Ugandan communities.
