Columbia River MOAA Foundation (CRMF) president, Dave Casteel, delivers a $500 check to the Clark County Veterans Assistance Center (CCVAC) in Vancouver on behalf of the Foundation and the Columbia River Chapter MOAA to the Executive Director and President. The center manages and disburses county funds for veterans, however, given the stringent requirements for these disbursements, many veterans, especially the homeless, do not qualify for this fund. For these veterans, community donations are relied upon. Last month CCVAC gave out 215 sack breakfast/lunches. They have also had 1,100 inquiries for assistance plus 500 for county fund assistance.

Columbia River MOAA Foundation (CRMF) president, Dave Casteel, delivers a $500 VISA gift card to the Intake Coordinator at the VA Transplant Lodge in Vancouver on behalf of the Foundation and the Columbia River Chapter MOAA. The lodge houses liver and kidney transplant patients and their caregivers. They currently have 21 guests out of 30 and with COVID limitations restricting occupancy to 50% and limiting common area kitchen use, the money is needed to buy food for transplant patients and their care givers—some residing there for over 6 months while waiting for a transplant.

The Columbia River Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) through its subsidiary 501(c)3 public nonprofit, the Columbia River MOAA Foundation (CRMF), has made several special donations to organizations serving veterans during this holiday season.
We donated $500 to the Clark County Veterans Assistance Center (CCVAC) to help provide breakfast and lunch sack lunches to homeless veterans as well as food gift cards, gas vouchers and cold weather gear. The CCVAC had to cancel their major fund-raising events this year and is dependent on local organizations and individuals to help.
We donated $500 to the Vancouver VA Campus “Lodge” which provides suites for veterans and their caregivers who are receiving kidney and liver transplants as well some who are receiving specialized oncology treatments. The donation will help provide transportation to and from the international airport as well as go towards Christmas meals, and other individual needs.
We also donated $500 to the Clark College Veterans Resource Center. Maj Gen “Buck” Marr, who is on the Veterans Advisory Committee at Clark College, delivered Family Friendly Food Gift cards and cash to the Associate Director of Veterans Services. Many of our veteran students are living day to day and this will help with food, gas and other essential needs.
In addition, we gave guidance to three homeless veterans residing at A-Warriors Way group home in Vancouver on how to apply to MOAA for an Emergency COVID-19 grant.

Clark County Auditor, Greg Kimsey, was the featured guest speaker for the October 15, 2020 Columbia River Chapter MOAA virtual meeting via ZOOM. Always a popular speaker at election time, Greg gave us an overview of the election process in Clark County and Washington State.

Washington has been conducting the election process by mail in ballots for many years. There have been literally hundreds of changes made to protect the integrity and security of the process. He told us overseas ballots to our military go out 45 days in advance of the election, which can be filled out, scanned and returned electronically. The machines that scan all the ballots are not connected to the internet and are locked in a secure room in secure office. The magnetic drives containing the tabulated data (no voter names) are sealed and securely stored until after 8:00PM election night at which time they are opened.

Some very helpful tools he mentioned are the Clark County Elections Web site at https://clarkvotes.org or https://clark.wa.gov/elections for ballot drop off locations and answers to any other questions you may have. You can even check the status of your ballot using the “Ballot Status Tool” on the https://clarkvotes.org site.

Questions were asked by members about other states starting this Vote-By Mail process only recently. He mentioned that our Secretary of State has been in contact with all 49 other Secretarys of State sharing how Washington has made the process safe and secure and how her office has focused on cyber security including using expert external cyber teams that monitor the process.
