Steven is a young parent and has just completed the Trades Pre Apprenticeship program where he obtained career exploration in the Trades, a flagging certification, OSHA 10 and CPR/First Aid. Through the Connect2Careers Program he also obtained a fork lift certification. He is co-enrolled with the WIAO Adult program and will soon be starting a paid work experience with the Clark County Public Works Department working on Fleet Maintenance. Steven’s long term goal is to become a Diesel Mechanic and to own a shop.

What Steven has to say about the Trades Academy?
“I was passionate about working on cars coming into the Pre Apprenticeship program”. “Every week we would learn about different careers in the Trades which sparked new interests and possibilities”. “Going into the program I had a limited idea of what area of Auto Mechanics I wanted to pursue and the program made me aware of opportunities for blue collar Trades jobs and some of the jobs relating to areas that I had not thought of before, including welding”.

“We got to go to worksites to learn about Electrician work and were given options to learn about careers as Pipe Fitters, Masonry Workers and Mechatronics”. “The instructor individualized learning experiences based on interests of the students”. “This program is a great way to find out about the Trades, how they function and what they do”. “Blue Collar jobs seem more career based with opportunities to make a decent wage”.

Angelica Believed and She Achieved (So Can YOU!)

When Angelica Trejo was a young Child she suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and had to learn how to walk and talk all over again. Through self-perseverance and determination she graduated from high school and during that time became a student volunteer with the Boys and Girls Club. Due to her TBI Angelica still experiences short term memory loss and sometimes needs extra time to complete tasks.

In 2016, Angelica enrolled into the Connect 2 Careers program and signed up for the Childcare Academy for online courses and paid training through the Connect 2 Careers Childcare Academy to become a Childcare Assistant in training. After completing a 10 week paid work experience Angelica was hired full time as a Childcare Assistant, and is now considering going on to college to study Early Childhood Education. When asked, what advice would you give to older youth interested in becoming a Childcare Worker? Angelica, responded: “I would tell them to be prepared to catch colds” and “It is challenging dealing with different types of special diets and needs of children as you have to pay close attention to their food allergies”. “You will get attached to the children really fast and will need to learn to be stern when teaching them about boundaries”. “I really like working here and want to become a pre-school teacher”. The Connect 2 Careers program is a WIOA federally funded program for Out of School Youth ages 16-24. Through this opportunity Angelica obtained a STARS certification and other childcare related and professional development classes to prepare her to become a Childcare Assistant
