In 2023 The Vancouver Master Chorale brought Mozart's powerful Requiem to life! From the haunting intensity of the Dies Irae to the breathtaking serenity of the Lacrimosa, every movement reminded us why this masterpiece continues to captivate audiences more than 230 years after it was written.

Mozart didn't just speak the language of music—he spoke several languages! Along with his native German, he knew Italian, French, Latin, and English. His love of languages helped him connect with musicians and audiences across Europe, and many of his greatest operas were written in Italian.

Mozart’s humour was not confined to his personal interactions—it spilled over into his music. He delighted in creating pieces that were as funny as they were brilliant. His famous “A Musical Joke” (K. 522) is a prime example.

Composed in 1787, this piece parodies incompetent musicianship. Deliberately clumsy harmonies, awkward phrasing, and unexpected shifts make the work an amusing satire of amateur composers and performers. Despite its comedic intent, it showcases Mozart’s remarkable skill, as only a true master could compose intentional “mistakes” with such finesse.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart once had a pet Starling. It's been said that he transcribed a melody the bird had sung, which happens to be very similar to the opening bars of the third movement of his Piano Concerto No. 17 in G, K. 453, written only a few weeks earlier. Starlings are known to be excellent at vocal mimicry, and it’s likely that Mozart taught the bird to sing this tune.

Mozart held an elaborate funeral procession for the bird when it died. He even had written and performed a poem for the bird in it's honor.

Mozart amazed audiences with his extraordinary musical memory. He was known for hearing a piece of music just once and remembering it with remarkable accuracy.

It's said that while visiting Rome at the age of 14 Mozart heard Allegri's Miserere performed in the Sistine Chapel. He later wrote the entire piece down from memory.

Mozart composed his first piece of music at 5 years old. From there, he went on to create more than 600 musical works throughout his lifetime. He died at the age of 35, leaving behind one of the most remarkable collections of music in history.
