That's the reality facing C&H Sugar retirees.
Healthcare in retirement isn't charity; it's deferred compensation that workers negotiated and earned. We stand with the retirees and the members of ILWU Local 6 as they fight to protect the promises made to every generation of workers.

Most people don't know the history behind C&H Sugar and Hawaiʻi's sugar plantations. For generations, the plantation system was built on the exploitation of Native Hawaiians and immigrant workers from Japan, the Philippines, China, Portugal, Korea, Puerto Rico, and many other places. Workers were intentionally divided by ethnicity to keep them from organizing, until they united through the ILWU and helped dismantle that system, changing the course of Hawaiʻi's labor history.
That's why it was so meaningful to see our brothers and sisters from ILWU Local 142 standing shoulder to shoulder with Local 6 on the C&H picket line. Their support wasn't just a show of solidarity, it was a reminder that our history is connected, our struggles are connected, and when one ILWU local stands up, we all stand together.

Thank you to our amazing volunteers and everyone who showed up to our annual bloody fifth picnic! With face painting, snow cones, bouncy houses, prizes, games and we cannot forget the incredible spread of food that our young workers and other members put on, It was an astounding success.

Sharing a meal, watching our kids play, and spending time together reminds us that solidarity isn't just something we fight for on the job; it's something we build together every day.

Thanks again to our volunteers! I don’t know what we would do without all of you. ✊

Today is the Bloody 5th & The Fight Isn't Over.
Every July 5th, we remember the workers who gave everything so future generations would never have to endure what they did.
Before 1934, longshore workers fought for more than just better wages. We fought against corruption, unsafe working conditions, discrimination, exhausting hours, and a system that forced working people to beg for a chance to earn a day's pay. We fought for dignity. We fought for fairness. Most of all, we fought for the right of workers to stand together instead of being divided.
On Bloody Thursday, Howard Sperry and Nick Bordoise were killed for standing on a picket line. Their sacrifice and the sacrifices of the others who lost their lives during the 1934 strike, helped secure the union hiring hall, a coastwide contract, and protections that forever changed the lives of longshore workers and their families.
Ninety-one years later, it's easy to think of Bloody Thursday as history. But the struggle between working people and concentrated power never really ends. Today, workers across this country still fight for fair wages, safe workplaces, affordable healthcare, secure retirements, and the right to organize without intimidation. We still see attempts to divide workers, weaken unions, and convince us that we're stronger apart than we are together.
The greatest lesson of 1934 isn't just what was won. It's how it was won.
Workers of different backgrounds stood shoulder to shoulder. Communities stood with workers. Other unions answered the call in solidarity. They understood something that remains just as true today: when working people stand together, they are stronger than any one employer or any one industry.
The rights we enjoy today were never given freely. They were earned through courage, sacrifice, and solidarity.
As we remember Howard Sperry, Nick Bordoise, Dicky Parker, John Knudsen, Shelvy Daffron, Olaf Helland and others who were killed or injured. Let’s honor them not only with our words, but by continuing to stand together, defend one another, and remember that an injury to one is an injury to all.

ILWU Local 6 has been in bargaining since early June with C&H Sugar, fighting for a strong contract that protects healtheare for our retired members, respects our seniority system, and supports fair working conditions around scheduling and overtime pay. After C&H Sugar refused to consider the latest proposals, and put forward proposals that would claw back retiree healtheare benefits and slash overtime pay, Local 6 members made the difficult decision to go on strike. Our hearts are with the workers, families, and entire Longview community following the tragic accident at the Nippon Dynawave mill.

While these workers may not have been ILWU members, they were union brothers. They were working people who showed up every day to provide for their families, stand beside their coworkers, and help keep their community moving forward. In moments like this, labor stands together.

The Cowlitz Wahkiakum Central Labor Council and the Association of Western Pulp and Paper Workers (AWPPW) have come together to establish a fund at the Lower Columbia Longshoremen's Federal Credit Union that will provide support to families struggling with financial burdens caused by this tragedy.
