Fall is here, and that means planting season on Main Street!

As part of the Main Street Promise, 137 new trees are being planted, a 52% increase over the number previously planted along the corridor.

The project also includes 2,630 plants, new irrigation, and deeper, more tree-friendly planting areas designed to support healthy growth while helping prevent roots from impacting the sidewalk.

This Friday, October 2, visit Downtown Vancouver, WA, as galleries host receptions for their newest shows, restaurants and wineries offer live music, and local businesses stay open late with pop-up makers and special events.

Community feedback helped shape the Main Street Promise Project, including a focus on preserving the history of downtown Vancouver. Historic features along Main Street were identified, restored and incorporated into the project so they can remain part of the streetscape.

Here are 7 historic features you can find along Main Street:

1. Vancouver Commerce Centre Sign — SE corner of E 8th & Main St.The historic sign received a new foundation, and its internal lighting system was restored.

2. Reder Sidewalk Markers — NE corner of E 7th & Main St.
These terrazzo markers feature the name “REDER,” connecting today’s Main Street to Reder’s Department Drug Store, which once operated at 705 Main Street, as noted in The Evening Vancouver Columbian, published May 29, 1928.

3. Weigel Building Stairway — SE corner of E 8th & Main St.
This historic cast-iron and concrete stairway dates to 1932 and provides access to the basement of the Art Deco Weigel Building, designed by noted local architect Day W. Hilborn.

4. 1949 Concrete Mailbox Post — NW corner of W Mill Plain Blvd & Main St.
A concrete post that once supported a U.S. Mail collection box, dating to 1949.

5. Salvation Army Marker — NW corner of E 5th & Main St.
Installed in 1941, this bronze plaque honors the Salvation Army’s work in Vancouver.

6. J.C. Penney Terrazzo Entry — 806 Main St.
The original terrazzo flooring at the former J.C. Penney store remains at the main entrance. Inscribed with “J.C. Penney Co. Inc.,” the flooring connects the building to its past use and Main Street’s commercial history.

7. Kiggins Theatre Entryway — 1011 Main St.
The historic Kiggins Theatre retains its original ticket booth, surrounded by historic tile and terrazzo flooring.

Main Street is OPEN! ⁠

Come celebrate the safer, more accessible and connected Main Street on Oct. 7 from 5 to 8 p.m. ⁠Join Vancouver's Downtown Association and us on the Kiggins block for live music, remarks, and light refreshments 🎉⁠

During the project, we invested in foundational infrastructure on Main Street. We reconstructed aging water, wastewater, and stormwater utilities. We repaved Main Street and parts of side streets and installed traffic signals and an e-bike charging station.⁠

To improve safety and accessibility, we included a curbless design, speed bumps, extended sidewalks, tactile sidewalk treatments, audible crossings, enhanced intersections and crosswalks, and 104 bike parking spaces. We switched to parallel parking, with 123 total spots 🚗⁠

We added decorative lighting, six spaces for public art, and outdoor seating and furnishings. Main Street is festival-ready, equipped with removable bollards for pedestrian-only events and power access. ⁠

: From the museum’s collection, this image from 1910 shows the recently constructed hospital in Yacolt, Washington, a two-story frame structure with a full basement and 14 rooms. Built by the Twin Falls Logging Company, the facility officially opened in September 1909, offering critical care to the hundreds of loggers and sawmill workers in the region. Before its construction, those injured on the job had to be transported to hospitals in Vancouver or farther, an arduous journey in an already dangerous industry.

Main Street is opening up! The 900 block and Ninth Street intersection are now open, bringing us one step closer to seeing the full project complete. A few finishing touches remain, including 100+ new trees, 16 light columns, and landscaping.

But it's all worth celebrating. 🎉

Join us for First Friday on September 4th in downtown Vancouver! First Friday is a monthly celebration of local art, culture, music, and community. Galleries host receptions, businesses stay open late, listen to live music, visit pop-ups, and more!

This month, VDA is sponsoring live music at La Casita Art Gallery & Cultural Center, featuring Mango Twist and their tropical Latin music with a summer-breeze feeling.

The gallery will feature La Tienda Del Sol, presenting traditional Indigenous foods, Wixárika (Huichol) ceremonial attire, and artwork.
