Union members have the power to decide elections … when they vote.

10/18/2026

Another episode of Pencils Down, Rise Up! has dropped! Educators are the experts about what is happening in our public schools, what students need, and what school staff need to ensure they can support students’ needs and should have a seat at the decision-making table. One way to ensure access to that seat is to ensure educators are the decisionmakers by running for public office. Janie White, President of the Washington Education Association, talks with Joe Bento, a high school teacher, LGBTQ+ advocate, WEA member and local union President, and former school board President, to discuss WEA members running for local office. We are heartbroken for the families, students and staff at Silver Rail Elementary and across the beautiful city of Bend. A dark day for all Oregonians. But in moments like these, we have each other. If you'd like to share a message of love and support for our members, please email [email protected]. 🩵

State Superintendent Chris Reykdal's response to the tragic shooting at an Oregon elementary school today.

10/16/2026

Our hearts are with Bend tonight and every family affected by the tragedy at Silver Rail Elementary School. Three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a teacher lost their lives.

A 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were hospitalized in critical condition, according to Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz. Behind each of those ages is someone deeply loved, and families facing a day no one should ever have to endure.

We mourn those whose lives were taken and hold the injured, their loved ones, classmates and school staff in our hearts. To the first responders, educators and neighbors who stepped forward today, thank you for caring for this community.

In the days ahead, let’s keep showing up with compassion, respect families’ privacy, and remember that their need for support will last long beyond tonight. Bend, you are loved. 🤍
