CATT Northwest

CATT Northwest It’s New Tech Day! Serving the Northwest, Southwest, and Northeast regions of the U.S.

The Northwest Center for Assistive Technology Training (CATT) Program is a collaboration between the American Printing House for the Blind (APH), the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) and the Washington State School for the Blind (WSSB). Our mission is to provide assistive technology training to teachers of blind/low vision children, utilizing a "train the trainer" model, while also prov

iding support/training for other professionals working with blind or low vision children as well as parents/caregivers of a child who is blind or has low vision, including those with additional disabilities. Assistive technology options are provided through APH and training is provided through WSSB employed trainers serving a ten-state/territory region: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands and American Samoa.

It is with great sadness we share the passing of Dr. M. Cay Holbrook, an incredible pioneer in our field. Cay's vision and leadership has impacted the lives of countless students, educators, and parents.

We are deeply grateful for her work on the Building on Patterns (BOP) curriculum and the 2nd and 3rd editions of Foundations of Education from APH Press. Cay was also the recipient of our highest honor, the Wings of Freedom Award, in 2017.

At WSSB's all-staff this week, we led a training on mouseless navigation on the computer.

WSSB staff sharpened their key command skills as CATT-NW staff modeled how to get students started on using a computer without a mouse. Shhh…it was actually a JAWS training! 🦈

No mouse when CATT is around!😺✅️🚫🐁

Do you know about the Paige Connect? Available first from the American Printing House for the Blind and on quota, with support for both text and math translation! It’s the braille learning tool we’ve all been waiting for. Works seamlessly with a free web-based online learning platform and/or an iOS app.

At the American Printing House for the Blind and CATT booth during the recent conference, Dr. Ting demos the ease of brailling on a traditional Perkins brailler while a sighted bystander reads what she brailles on an iPad.
