Today we have kohlrabi to give away, harvested from our own organic garden. If you’re not sure how to eat it, try this recipe for a fine slaw salad with apples, toasted hazelnuts, and apple c***r vinaigrette dressing. It’s simpler that it sounds, and such a refreshing taste for Fall.

October 15 we celebrated the ribbon cutting on a new greenhouse for the Center's organic garden. Pictured here we have Pat and Lou Albert, who donated funds to purchase a kit and Marilyn Puccinelli, our own master gardener whose vision it was to have a garden at the Center in the first place. Mayor Anne McEnerny-Ogle was in attendance.

Volunteers worked hard over the summer to put together the greenhouse. Last year, 2 tons of fresh organic produce were harvested from this garden. The greenhouse will give us a head start on the next growing season by allowing us to start seedlings inside before the outdoor environment is ready to support them, so the yield will be even higher! Produce is shared among volunteers and with people who rely on the Center to feed their families.

During the month of August, 49 volunteers distributed 17,331 pounds of food to 523 households and 446 homeless individuals. Additionally, volunteers in the clothing department have been busy giving out 2700 pieces of clothing! Volunteers work hard in a crowded space to sort through an abundance of donations and display good quality items, so people can find what they need. Meanwhile, our organic garden is flourishing with the help of even more volunteers, who harvested 470 pounds of produce to share.

Thank you so much to everyone who has given of their time, talents, and resources for this endeavor! And don't hesitate to stop by on Monday or Tuesday if you need something. That's why we are here!

If you'd like to learn more about our ministry at the Center, drop by Sunday, October 15 between 10AM and 4PM for an open house. Watch for details!

Join us for some summer fun! Donate these items for summer picnics. . . Most of the food we distribute comes from our collaborations with the Oregon Food Bank and grocery stores like Chuck's Produce and Fred Meyer, but they don't always have everything we need. Let's celebrate summer by providing condiments to go along with the staples we normally carry. Thank you in advance! www.clarkcountyacs.com
