Wassenberg Art Center

Wassenberg Art Center The Wassenberg is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting and encouraging the arts

Our Story

The Wassenberg Art Center is a not for profit community art center which presents an average of 10 admission-free exhibits annually. We offer art classes, workshops, unique events and activities for adults and children throughout the year. Charles Wassenberg gifted his home in 1954 after his death for the creation of a local art center. He and his wife Vera and many friends were avid ar

t enthusiasts and their combined love of art and architecture lives on and grows because of his generosity. One friend in particular, Lew Miller was instrumental in planning for the legacy of art to carry on in the Van Wert area. Once housed in the Wassenberg Victorian era home it is now located in the newly renovated Van Wert Armory conveniently located on Washington Street (Interstate 127). In August of 2012, the Van Wert County Foundation purchased the armory property which was scheduled to be demolished. The 12,000 square foot facility, saved from the wrecking ball has made a smooth transition from to proponent of turbulent times to the creation of the visual arts and creative placemaking. The Wassenberg Art Center and its mission continue today in part from the Wassenberg trust, the Van Wert County Foundation, community support, donations and membership dues.

Tiny hands, big creativity! 🤎
Join Maisee Short this Saturday for a Toddler Clay Experience at the Wassenberg Art Center. Little ones will explore the magic of clay through sculpting, squishing, shaping, and creating their very own masterpiece.

Then, return two weeks later to paint their finished piece! We'll fire each creation in our kiln, transforming it into a keepsake you'll treasure for years to come.

With the Peony Festival coming up this weekend, we wanted to share a look back at our recent Oil Pastel class with Lily! 🌸

Everyone painted a peony in shades of pink, surrounded by vibrant green foliage. As with so many of our classes, seeing the unique vision each student brought to the piece was the best part. Some artists leaned toward realism, capturing every detail, while others embraced a more impressionistic approach. We can use all the fancy art terms we want, but what really matters is creating in a way that feels true to you. That's where the magic - and the happiness - lives. That is why art, and the Wassenberg, exist.

Never tried oil pastels? Lily has a fantastic duckling waiting for you to create this month! 🦆 (link in profile)

Back in April, artist Adrian Guenther and his author dad, Rob Snow, joined our Lil ArtReach families to share their book, The Man with Invisible Feathers. After enjoying a reading of their story, we headed to the art room to paint a bird inspired by the book.

Adrian has always been so generous with his talent and enthusiastic spirit, sharing both with everyone who comes through our doors. It was an absolute privilege to welcome him and his dad as they shared this incredibly special collaboration with our young makers and their families. Thank you both for a memorable morning!

Join us for THIS SATURDAY'S Lil ArtReach! There will be no Lil ArtReach in July, so you won't want to miss this one.

Need a hint about the theme? We'll be celebrating a certain something turning 250. 🎆❤️💙
