**🐺 COYOTE ALERT FOR CAT CAREGIVERS & PET OWNERS 🐱**
**Mating & Denning Season In Los Angeles**
Coyotes are entering their most territorial and protective time of year, making **January through August** the highest-risk period for community cats, outdoor pets, and pet owners.
# # # ⚠️ Why Risk Increases
During mating and pup-rearing season, coyotes are:
✅ More territorial
✅ More active during daylight hours
✅ Traveling farther in search of food
✅ More likely to defend den areas
✅ Less tolerant of cats, small pets, and other animals
# # # 🐱 Community Cats Are Especially Vulnerable
Cats may be attacked even when coyotes are **not hunting for food**. Coyotes often view cats as competitors or intruders near den sites.
# # # 🛡️ What You Can Do
• Feed community cats during daylight hours only
• Remove leftover food immediately
• Avoid feeding near brush, vacant lots, sheds, or dense vegetation
• Provide elevated escape routes and safe shelters
• Watch for repeated coyote sightings in the same area
• Keep pet cats indoors whenever possible
# # # 🚩 Signs A Den May Be Nearby
• Coyotes seen repeatedly at the same time each day
• Coyotes standing their ground instead of retreating
• Frequent howling, barking, or yipping
• Coyotes following or escorting people and pets away
# # # 📅 Peak Danger Period
**February – August**
**Highest concern: April – June (Pup Season)**
**Let's protect our pets, community cats, and wildlife by staying alert and practicing safe coexistence.**
