Found Tortoise 5-18-26 (Granada Hills)

Tortoise was found in an area south of the 118 fwy and near the 11300 blk of White Oak. The tortoise was reported to have been abandoned at a homeless encampment in the area. The tortoise is an obvious pet, and is currently enjoying the hospitality of the California Turtle & Tortoise Club Valley Chapter, after release from the LA West Valley shelter.

If your tortoise is missing and you think this one may be yours, please have photos available and be able to identify. Please respond to this post or send us a message, and the Valley Chapter adoption team leader will contact you.

They don’t rush.
They don’t panic.

…yet they outlive almost everything.

While most animals are built for speed,
tortoises are built for time.

A Tortoise doesn’t burn energy fast.
It moves slowly, eats simply, and lives with almost no urgency.

Inside its body, everything reflects that :

A slow metabolism that reduces wear over decades.
A steady heart rate that keeps stress low.
A body designed to use energy efficiently, not waste it.

And then there’s protection.
A shell that doesn’t make it invincible…
but gives it something most animals don’t :

Time to survive.

But here’s what makes it even more fascinating :

Scientists believe tortoises may also have strong DNA repair mechanisms and a higher resistance to age related damage.

Not magic.
Not luck.

Just evolution choosing survival over speed.

Tortoise found near or in Valle Lindo Park in Camarillo (800 Block Aileen St) and turned into Camarillo Shelter on 3-26-26. Now enjoying the hospitality of CA Turtle & Tortoise Club.

Please be able to identify the tortoise as yours, and photos will be helpful. The tortoise appears to be in good condition and somewhat on the sleepy side, so may have recently emerged from brumation (hibernation).
If you suspect this may be your tortoise, and you thought it was still sleeping, check all those areas where the tortoise hides in the yard, or sleeps over the winter, if not boxed for its winter nap.
Please send us a PM and the adoption team leader will contact you.

Maybe she’s born with it. Maybe it’s prickly pear. 💄

This Mojave Desert tortoise may look like a diva, but life in the desert is tough. These threatened tortoises roam long distances for water and food, like the prickly pear cactus fruit. They’ll even cross highways in search of puddles after rain. If you see them on the move, please slow down and give them safe passage. 🐢
