Journey Out is a Los Angles-based nonprofit leading the fight for the freedom and survival of all those whose lives have been destroyed by s*x trafficking and commercial s*xual exploitation. The individuals we serve have often endured years of abuse and exploitation, many starting in childhood, and the recovery process is often a long one. For more than 40 years we have walked alongside our client

s to support them in their journey to rebuild their lives. We are known as a tenacious organization with a big heart, and a long history of service and success. We provide the critical services and support needed to break free from commercial s*xual exploitation and s*x trafficking. We also provide prevention programs to ensure no one ever enters the life. Journey Out programs focus on direct services, prevention, knowledge and empowerment.

We want you to feel well equipped to take action so let’s unpack these three steps we mentioned in the picture together.

1. Learn the signs: What signs or red flags tell us is that something is wrong and that we need to stop and have a trauma informed conversation to find out what that might be. A couple signs: If someone seems fearful, anxious or hypervigilant that is a clear sign that something is wrong. Also, if someone with them is exerting an unusual level of control, talking over them or for them and/or making decisions for them that is another sign that something may be wrong. For more signs see the second picture, which is 10 Red Flags of Human Trafficking created by the American Hospital Association.

2. Share resources: Share social media posts from human trafficking nonprofits, survivors, and advocates. There are so many people speaking and working hard to bring important awareness about trafficking. Share their posts.

3. Support local survivor resources: There are many nonprofits like Journey Out working to resource survivors in the Los Angeles Metro. Pick one and support them with monetary donations, goods donations or you can even volunteer your time.

And always remember that while Human Trafficking Awareness Month is just one month a year resources for survivors and for those nonprofits supporting them are needed all year long.

"It is imperative for there to be collaboration amongst different entities within our city to best help serve survivors of human trafficking," said Nayeli May, Executive Director of Journey Out. "Providing survivors vital resources and different options is crucial, and we need to approach this with compassion and sensitivity."

We are excited that our Executive Director, Nayeli May had the opportunity to speak at Los Angeles City Attorney’s Press Conference today in honor of Human Trafficking Awareness month. In this picture she is next to the police officers in the black dress. This picture was taken by their photographer.

Link to whole press conference is in comments.

As we round the corner into the end of January, which has been Human Trafficking Awareness Month, remember that Human Trafficking is a reality for victims and survivors not just this month, but every day of the year.

We at Journey Out live this reality out every day and we will continue our work of both reaching out to survivors in crisis and extending ongoing support to survivors throughout the year.

Thank you for being a part of this work with us. We appreciate your support! 🙌🏼

Martin Luther King Jr. spoke wisdom into many areas of our culture and we can all learn from his words.

These words remind us to listen to each other and to each other’s stories because when we know each other better the fear and stereotypes that hold us back will melt away.

In the context of our work with trafficking survivors and in the middle of human trafficking awareness month we remember the importance of listening to survivor’s stories. Survivor’s stories give us a place to connect face to face with the issue of trafficking and to erase our misconceptions and fear.

Supporting Survivors means so many things. It means help with obtaining shelter. It means visits to our drop in center for essentials like food, hygiene products, and clothes. It means trauma informed therapy. Sometimes it means crisis response to hospitals or police stations. Sometimes it means transportation back to a place that they have a support system. It is different for each survivor, but whatever it looks like we at Journey Out are grateful every day to be a part of this work!

When we count the things we are grateful for in 2025 all of you who have extended a hand to help us support survivors are among them.

Thank you for joining with us in 2025 to support so many survivors who really needed a hand up.

Rebuilding a life doesn’t happen overnight, but it does happen, it is happening one step at a time for these survivors.

Survivors need support with housing, and essentials like groceries, clothing, and hygiene products throughout the year. Our staff works hard to help them provide them these resources as well as to connect them to the many services they may need as they rebuild their lives.

Please partner with us in this important work of coming alongside survivors of trafficking and exploitation. See link to give in the comments. Thank you!

“Trafficking doesn’t stop over the holidays. Traffickers don’t usually give those that they exploit breaks. And while anyone can be trafficked there are vulnerable circumstances that traffickers often exploit like insecure housing which may be even more problematic over the holidays. Traffickers prey on this vulnerability and every vulnerability that they can exploit.”
