This past weekend we partnered with Just in Time in San Diego for a screening of “Rose Tinted Nostalgia” and “Writer’s Block.” Just In Time is a caring community for transition-age foster youth who provides holistic services to help foster youth become confident, capable, and connected. Our Alumni were able to relay the impact KITS has made on their lives and career and answer questions the SD Just in Time members had about filmmaking. Thank you to Dre, Natalia, and Tyler for representing “Writer’s Block” and Myah for representing “Rose Tinted Nostalgia.” Thank you to Don Wells and Brittany Curran and everyone who helped to organize this amazing event. We are so grateful for the welcoming atmosphere to display what KITS does and are excited for what the future may hold for filmmakers within the Just In Time community.

So what actually happens at these Table Reads? When they arrive the youth get together with their groups and go over their scripts one more time for any additions before presenting the rough draft or pitch to the industry professionals who then give notes and constructive feedback. At the last Table Read at one group wrote a script entitled “The Boss” which leans into inspirations of Romeo & Juliet and action while the other group is developing their story with the working title “777” which nods to black dandyism, scandal and a potential casino game style competition. Our groups were given so many amazing notes for character development, scenery and costuming ideas, and they were asked important questions to think about to clarify and polish their scripts for a well written script. We can’t wait to see you at the next one!

Full circle moments like this remind us why we do this work. KITS had the honor of partnering with Cal State Dominguez Hills for a special film screening highlighting Toro Guardian Scholar students and KITS Alumni who shared their personal journeys through filmmaking. Myah reflected on her journey from screenwriter to actor in her film “Rose Tinted Nostalgia,” while Cesar shared what the collaborative writing process looked like behind “D.E.A.T.H. Group” and how he developed the character “Ted.” We also screened “Rite of Passage,” co-starring Nagi, continuing the celebration of student voices and creative growth.

What made this event even more meaningful was seeing Toro Guardian Scholar alumni and KITS alumni return to their alma mater as representatives of their careers in film and television. Moments like these show the power of storytelling, mentorship, and creating spaces where foster and opportunity youth can thrive creatively and professionally. A huge thank you to CSUDH Guardian Scholars for welcoming us. And congratulations to Cesar on graduating with the Class of 2026 with a B.A. in Film and Television Production. We can’t wait to see what’s next.

HAPPY FOSTER CARE AWARENESS DAY 💙
During Foster Care Awareness Month, we’re celebrating by screening “Recovering Innocence” in partnership with .la This powerful documentary about the overmedication of foster youth, was created and produced by some of the most creative and talented young people with lived experience in foster care.

Today’s screening is another reminder that these stories deserve to be seen, heard, and felt. This film has already created impact through screenings in Louisiana for a District 2 event, at LA DCFS, SMC, and now at Lionsgate — and the conversation is only continuing to grow.

Every gift you give — whether through donations, volunteering your time, or sharing resources — helps former foster youth reclaim their voices, tell their stories, and pave a new future for themselves. You can still DONATE at bit.ly/KITS17
