Eastwood Community Center

Eastwood Community Center Eastwood Community Center started out as the Eastwood School in 1940. The Eastwood School District #35 was established in the late 1800’s.

Located near Van Buren Mo, it became the Community Center when the schools were combined in the area. The original building stood a short distance south and west of the present structure. The original frame school was 24x32 feet and was typical of the school buildings of that era. In June 1938, the citizens of the community voted to approve a proposition, which would provide funds to construct a T

wo-room rock building. The work was to be done under the auspices of the Workers Progress Association, WPA. The total cost to the taxpayer was to be an additional 15 to 22 cents per annum. The rock structure was completed about 1940. The School district was discontinued in the early 1960’s during reorganization /consolidation of the county schools. At that time, the building became the Eastwood Community Center. It has been used for Community and family gatherings. For several years, the woman’s quilting guild helped support the upkeep. It was also used as the local election-voting center. The building has hosted the Annual deer hunter’s supper since 1944. It has always featured local home cooked food and desserts donated by the community. It is the one major fundraiser to help with the building expenses and upkeep. As with any old building, over time, it needs more than the basic care. We are in the process of renovating this lovely historic building.

Happy Eastwood Day. We had a smaller crowd than expected, but everybody had fun.
Ken and Flossie Ellis brought their Model T for everybody to enjoy. I managed to work my way into a pic with it. We had music thanks to Larry Spurlock. Plus a small petting zoo, courtesy of Sherlyn Jones. Sheila Mann did double duty. She grilled the hot dogs and ran the games. So talented 😁. Ivy Napier helped with beverages and signing people up for the drawing.

Plenty of food prepared by Denise Morgan, Barb Ashton, Sheila Mann, and Carol Spurlock. Some extra desserts thanks to Phyllis Van Belle and Jessica Komrska.

We gave away several door prizes today as well. A big Thank You to the Carter County Nutrition Center, Van Buren Tires, Headlines, A Touch of Grace, Sherlyn Jones, and Shelter Insurance.

We put out more flags today. These flags were donated by the Eastwood Community Center and most are courtesy of VFW Post 3009 from Mt View. Thank you. Our cemetery is definitely red white and blue, honoring the service of many citizens from our area. Enjoy a few pictures of our cemetery.

There are several residents of the cemetery, who we can’t tell if there are veterans. Some families include the Samples and others. Feel free to send me a note or comment. I still have a few flags I can post.

Also, if anybody has some small metal pipes or even 1/4 inch pvc pipe that you don’t need, we would love to have it. My goal is to put one by every veterans stone to fully support their flag. Any help is appreciated. Thank you. Have a very safe and Happy Memorial Day weekend.

We had an excellent sale this weekend. The weather was great. We didn’t even put out everything we have. Sooooo our next sale will be May 2. Lots of antiques.

Speaking of antiques. While this isn’t an Eastwood item, it is still VERY cool and Carter County related. I have an old Ellsinore 8th grade graduation certificate dated May7, 1925.
To see it in person, it will soon be going to the Pioneer Museum in Ellsinore. It is too special to keep for myself.

At the Eastwood Cemetery, I recently noticed several flags were getting worn. So, we bought some to replace those. I have more flags coming soon thanks to Bill Moriarty. So my plan is to replace any flags that need replacing Plus I want to put flags on all our Veterans graves.
I need your help. Some graves are easy to know if they served. Let me know which relatives who reside in the Eastwood Cemetery were a member of our armed services so I can include them. Thank you

I have been busy going through old items that I had packed away. I found a few new gems that will be going in the Eastwood Museum this year.

The first item is the Carter County Graduation Exercises program for May 21, 1927. Elementary schools. Here are a few pages from the book.

Second is the 1937-38 School Directory of Carter County. Eastwood was number 35.
