The Passion of Saint John the Baptist, celebrated on August 29, honors the martyrdom of the prophet who prepared the way for Jesus Christ. John boldly spoke the truth and condemned King Herod Antipas for unlawfully marrying Herodias, the wife of his brother, which led to John being imprisoned. During a banquet, Herodias’s daughter danced for Herod, and he promised to give her whatever she asked. At her mother’s urging, she requested the head of John the Baptist. Although Herod was distressed, he ordered John to be beheaded because of the promise he had made before his guests. Saint John remained faithful to God and courageous in proclaiming the truth even when it cost him his life. His martyrdom reminds Christians of the importance of standing firm in their faith and remaining faithful to God despite opposition or sacrifice.

Saint Augustine of Hippo was one of the most influential saints and theologians in the history of the Catholic Church. Born in North Africa in 354, Augustine spent much of his youth searching for meaning and living a life far from the Christian faith, despite the constant prayers of his mother, Saint Monica. After years of spiritual struggle, he experienced a powerful conversion and was baptized by Saint Ambrose in 387. Augustine later became a priest and then Bishop of Hippo, dedicating his life to teaching, preaching, and defending the Christian faith. His writings, especially Confessions and The City of God, continue to shape Christian thought today. Saint Augustine died in 430 and was later named a Doctor of the Church. His life is a powerful reminder that no one is beyond God's grace and that a restless heart ultimately finds its peace in Him.

St. Monica was a devoted Christian mother best known for her strong faith, patience, and many years of prayer for her son, St. Augustine. Born in North Africa around 331, Monica was married to a man who did not share her Christian faith and often had a difficult temper. Through her kindness, perseverance, and example, he eventually converted to Christianity. Monica also prayed faithfully for Augustine, who spent many years living far from the Christian faith. She never gave up hope, and eventually witnessed his conversion and baptism before her death in 387. St. Monica is remembered as a powerful example of trusting in God and remaining faithful in prayer, especially when praying for loved ones who have fallen away from their faith. She is the patron saint of mothers, wives, and those praying for the conversion of family members.

St. Bartholomew, whose feast day is celebrated on August 24, was one of the Twelve Apostles chosen by Jesus and is traditionally identified with Nathanael in the Gospel of John. When Philip first told him about Jesus of Nazareth, Nathanael questioned, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” but still went to meet Jesus for himself. Jesus praised him as an honest man “in whom there is no guile,” and their encounter led Nathanael to proclaim Jesus as the Son of God and King of Israel. Although the Gospels tell us little about the rest of his life, tradition holds that Bartholomew went on to spread the Gospel and eventually died as a martyr for his faith. His story reminds Christians of the importance of honesty, openness, and being willing to follow Christ when we encounter the truth.

The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary celebrates Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth because of her special role as the Mother of Jesus Christ, the King of Kings. Throughout her life, Mary faithfully followed God with humility, trust, and love, from her “yes” at the Annunciation to standing beside Jesus at the Cross. Catholics believe that after her Assumption into Heaven, Mary was crowned Queen, where she continues to pray and intercede for God’s people. Her queenship is not about earthly power, but about loving service and her closeness to Christ. Pope Pius XII established the Feast of the Queenship of Mary in 1954, and today the Church celebrates it on August 22, one week after the Solemnity of the Assumption.

Saint Pope Pius X was born Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto in Italy in 1835 and served as pope from 1903 until his death in 1914. Coming from a humble family, he became known for his simple way of life, deep faith, and dedication to helping people grow closer to God. His papal motto, “To restore all things in Christ,” reflected his desire to renew the spiritual life of the Church. He encouraged Catholics to receive Holy Communion frequently and allowed children to receive their First Communion at a younger age. Pope Pius X also worked to improve religious education, reform Church music and worship, and defend Catholic teachings. Remembered for his humility, kindness, and devotion to the Eucharist, he was canonized in 1954, and his feast day is celebrated on August 21.

St. Bernard of Clairvaux was a 12th-century French monk, theologian, and one of the most influential leaders of the Cistercian Order. Known for his deep devotion to God, powerful preaching, and love for the Blessed Virgin Mary, Bernard entered monastic life at a young age and later became abbot of the monastery at Clairvaux. He encouraged a life of prayer, humility, simplicity, and love of Christ, while also advising popes and Church leaders during important events of his time. His writings on faith and the spiritual life had a lasting influence on the Catholic Church, and he was later named a Doctor of the Church. St. Bernard died in 1153, and his feast day is celebrated on August 20.

Focus will be on the topics of listening, rhythmic prayer, and slowing our pace, which contrasts with the contemporary emphasis on speed, growth, and constant acceleration. It will be grounded in the Rule of Saint Benedict and Sacred Scripture, while also examining how modernity in the West foregrounds and defines “progress”. The slow movement will be mentioned as it overlaps with the Benedictine tradition.
