As Florida voters are being asked to weigh a potential property tax relief proposal, a new report from Hillsborough County's DOGE Committee is raising questions about government spending.
The committee says it has identified approximately $682 million in potentially wasteful spending within county government.
One thing this discussion highlights is just how large government budgets have become.
In a budget of roughly $10 billion:
• 0.01% = $1 million
• 0.10% = $10 million
• 1.00% = $100 million
According to the committee, the $682 million they identified represents roughly 6.6% of the budget reviewed.
To be clear, these are recommendations, not cuts. County Commissioners will ultimately decide whether any action is taken when the report is presented on June 17.
Regardless of where you stand on property taxes, many taxpayers are asking the same question:
Should the potential savings identified by Hillsborough County's DOGE Committee be fully evaluated before voters are asked to decide on property tax relief following warnings that government services could be reduced?
What do you think?
