John and Julie King know just how important Special Olympics programs are to the community. Their daughter, Nicole, has been involved in Porter County’s chapter since she was a preschooler. Nicole is one of the over 800 athletes supported by the local chapter, and her parents are proud to be a part of this beneficial program. John has been a board member for the chapter for a number of years and c
urrently serves as a basketball coach, and Julie has been involved with Special Olympics in a number of ways, as well. They both know that Special Olympics’ dedication to inclusivity and year-round events necessitates outside funding, which is why they decided to start Livin’ It Up, a community-based fundraiser. Livin’ It Up took initial shape from Julie’s career as a talent scout. She was able to recruit numerous local musicians to participate in the fundraiser, which then expanded to include a variety of activities and attractions. The event welcomed families and individuals from around the county to enjoy a beautiful summer day and learn more about the Special Olympics program. All of the money raised from this August 2010 event went directly to Porter County Special Olympics. John and Julie hope to expand this fundraiser and make an even bigger community event and contributor to their local chapter. With your help, Livin’ It Up can continue to support Porter County Special Olympics.
