The Southern California Chapter of the American Liszt Society (ALS) was created in 2016 by APU's Eugene Alcalay and CSUN's Dmitry Rachmanov. The Chapter is dedicated to fostering an awareness and love of Franz Liszt's work, spirit and mission throughou

t Southern California, including the greater Los Angeles and San Diego metropolitan areas. We have featured ALS artists in guest recitals and master classes, as well as master class and recital performances of past Los Angeles International Liszt Competition Winners. We will present a one-day mini festival at APU on November 18, 2017, featuring student recitals, a lecture by Dr. Rachmanov, a recital by Dr. Alcalay, and master classes by John Perry and Dr. Sarkis Baltaian.

Dear colleagues and friends!
We’re excited to announce the 2025 American Liszt Society – Southern California Chapter Mini-Festival, taking place on Saturday, November 22 at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music.

Join us for a day celebrating the legacy of Franz Liszt and his contemporaries! The festival will include a student showcase recital highlighting local pianistic talent, a special lecture on the history and development of the nocturne by PCM senior faculty member Dr. Vatché Mankerian, and a masterclass with Dr. Stephen Cook, Executive Director of PCM. The day will conclude with the presentation of awards in three categories, including recognition for the Best Liszt Performance.

Applications are now open for recital and masterclass participation (grades 2 through post-collegiate). Repertoire is not limited to Liszt, though Liszt’s works will receive priority.

Application deadline: October 22, 2025

The American Liszt Society SoCal Chapter Festival is happening soon, on November 18.
Please, join us at the Azusa Pacific University School of Music (901 E Alosta Ave, Azusa, California 91702) for a day of celebrating the legacy of Franz Liszt!
We are pleased to present two recitals, one for pre-college and one for college students, masterclass with great Liszt performer and pedagogue, Dr. Jeff LaDeur, Improvisation Workshop with the ALS SoCal Board member Shu Tran, and the performance lecture by Dr. Jeff LaDeur, which he introduces with this quote by Ferrucio Busoni, “Music was born free; and to win freedom is its destiny… For the musical art-work exists, before its tones resound and after they die away, complete and intact. “ We will close the day with an announcement of the Awards for the best Liszt performance by a Pre-College and by a College student.
