Latest News!

We received the following message from our STS team!

“Hello everyone. We have a very busy last 4 days… We moved to and camped at one of the nicest and least used camps on the mountain at 16,200’… Then the following day we moved to high camp at 17,200’. We had perfect weather for the most beautiful section of the west buttress. Then we tried for the summit the next day. The conditions were tough on that section of the route. We were moving quite slow. Between our pace and the strong winds and snow, we were turned around at 18,200’. We had a 10 hour r/t summit attempt. We returned to camp exhausted and left for 14,200’ camp the next day (yesterday). We are just about to leave 14,200’ now. We are hoping to make it to Basecamp sometime tomorrow, with some luck… We had an amazing expedition and experience up here.”

We have received word that while our STS team attempted to summit Mt. Denali yesterday, one of the guides came down with Acute Mountain Sickness at 18,200’. AMS can lead to fatal illness caused by increased fluid in the lungs or brain. The team was also met with hard weather which left them without enough time to summit. Everyone made it back to camp at 17,000’ safely and are now regrouping to determine if there is enough time to make another attempt to summit today. Having been trapped at 14,200’ for more than 2 weeks resulted in a shortened window of time for Kirstie and Katelyn to summit as well as prolonging the amount of exposure the team had to high altitudes with decreased levels of oxygen. We are awaiting official word from the team as to whether or not there will be a second opportunity for them to attempt to summit today.

Our STS team made it to 17,000’ yesterday in just 4 1/2 hours! They will attempt to summit the mountain TODAY!!! Check out the message we received last night...

“The move from 16,200’-17,200’ entails some of the most technical terrain as well as some of the most beautiful terrain in the mountain. It is also the day that we have to carry the heaviest packs on the whole trip since we can’t use sleds. We are hoping to try for the summit tomorrow. After spending 16 days at 14,200’ we are running out of time, but we think we have a good chance tomorrow.”

Let’s wish them luck everyone!!!

We received word that the weather finally broke and the STS team is at 16,200 feet. 24 days from their start, and they’re at 16,200 heading to camp 4 at 17,000 ft. With 4,000 feet of the most difficult part of the climb to go, they’re determination and courage is remarkable by any measure. Hopefully, their dream of reaching the summit can come true.

The STS team has been been camped out at 14,200’ for 2 weeks now due to harsh weather conditions. Kirstie reported that there is no moving up or down the mountain at this point, and the AMS school has reported several other teams have been at a stand still as well.

The girls thank everyone for their support!

“We are still at 14k waiting for the weather to move up. We have had quite a bit of wind here in camp, and the outlook is for severe winds higher in the mountain through Monday. We are hoping for improved conditions on Tuesday…!?!? Spirits are well here at 14,200’. The girls say hi and thanks to everyone following along.”

The last word we received from Kirstie and Katelyn’s guide team was that they were waiting out a storm before heading to the next base camp at 16,200 ft. If anyone would like to drop a message in the comments section of this post, we’ll send it to the girls as encouragement while they patiently wait ☺️

Let’s show them some LOVE!!!

Late last night we received another update from the guide team assisting our STS ladies in their challenge to summit Mt. Denali. Check out the message below!
“We made a guides carry yesterday to 17,200’. On our way down we started building our intermediate camp at 16,200’. 16’200’ used to be a popular camp but it hasn’t been used much in the last decade. I’ve actually camped there a lot. It’s one of the most beautiful camps on the mountain but it is on a narrow ridge and hard to build so most people go all the way to 17,200’. We have been in a snow and wind storm since last night. Gusts up to 55 mph. We will most likely be waiting out this storm for another day or two...Everyone is doing great and are still in great spirits!”

Kirstie & Katelyn are . These two ladies are supporting Building Homes For Heroes in an effort to help gift more mortgage-free homes to our nation’s heroes. This week the organization has gifted 2 homes to wounded veterans in need and are on track to gift, on average, 1 home every 11 days!

We have a new update for you all regarding the girls! Katelyn got word to her mother yesterday that the team is at 11,000 feet camped under Motorcycle Hill while their guides are doing a “carry”. The guides are moving gear up to the next camp which is at 14,000 feet in advance of their climb. This is extremely helpful! The guides will have a clear and current understanding of the terrain before plotting each segment of this climb.
