udents. A BRIEF HISTORY OF ATLANTIS CRICKET CLUB - NY
In 1964 a group of young cricketers in New York got together and formed Carib Sports Club. Duncan, O. Williams, V. Scholar, K. Warner, E. Henry, D. Barnard, C. Taitt, E. Simmons, L. Matheson (now deceased) P. Martin, Dr. S. Joseph, R. Gonzalez, and C. Miller. In their quest for excellence or historical value they later agreed upon the name Atlantis, and thus Atlantis Cricket Club was formally established in 1966. Throughout its existence, the organization's leadership has exemplified stability, a sense of purpose, exemplary conduct on and off the field and a great deal of camaraderie among its members, which resulted in enormous success. Lawrence B. Duncan the first president of the club was extremely influential in the formation of the Long Island NY Cricket League and the great achievements that followed that organization. His quiet demeanor, disciplined approach to life and strong moral character endeared him to all who came into contact with the gentle giant from humble beginnings in St. Vincent, West Indies. Oscar "Sharkie" Williams the first Atlantis captain and former national player from Antigua & Barbuda was the backbone of the team in the 60’s. His unruffled mannerisms and pleasant personality endeared him to his teammates and as a result of his leadership, the club achieved tremendous success. In 1970's the club's roster was enhanced by the influx of several former national players from the Caribbean, who quickly showcased their abilities resulting in the club being a dominant force in USA cricket for 13 years. Former Guyana pace bowler Carlyle Miller led the club during that exciting period and its participation in the Long Island Cricket League. Atlantis was undefeated as league champions for eight consecutive years. The club’s representation on the league's squad totaled six players on several occasions. Atlantis has made several overseas tours and continues to be held in very high esteem by its colleagues in Canada, Barbados, Bermuda, and England. Several high profile individuals such as the former Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister, The Rt. Hon. Lester Bird and former West Indies Test player and captain Clive Lloyd and Clayton Lambert, a former West Indies Test player and US national coach; both of whom are now Honorary Life Members of Atlantis. Atlantis is truly a microcosm of international and Caribbean members, having had among its membership; players from Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Australia, Bangladesh, Barbados, England, Grenada, Guyana, India, Jamaica, Pakistan, St. Vincent & The Grenadines, and Trinidad & Tobago. The club has also added several former Test players to its list of honorary life members, including Sir Clive Lloyd, Sir Andy Roberts, Alvin Kallicharran, Lance Gibbs, Roger Harper, Sir Curtly Ambrose, Lawrence Rowe, Basil Butcher, Snr, Joe Solomon, Joel "Big Bird" Garner, Clayton Lambert, Gus Logie, Adam Sanford, Michael Holding, Sir Charles Griffith, and former West Indies women’s Test player and assistant coach Stephanie Power. Atlantis boasts a senior men’s squad, six of whom have or are currently on the USA national men’s cricket squad. The club also supports a representative Atlantis women’s squad, with eight of the players having represented or are currently representing the USA, on the national women’s team. This is the look of relief on the face of USA Women's captain Aditi Chudasama after her side managed a great escape to beat Namibia by four wickets with four balls to spare. The fielding on both sides was poor to say the least, and USA shot themselves in the foot badly on countless occasions with drops in the field to allow Namibia to get to 144. Top-scorer Yasmeen Khan who made 74 was dropped on 14, 53 and had another half-chance on 57 while two more chances went down late in the innings as well with Wilka Mwatile dropped on 0 and 5 to make 15 not out. Tara Norris finally got Khan out as part of three wickets in the 17th over in the field that prevented Namibia from putting up an even more imposing total than they wound up with.

But Namibia gave away as many as they got from USA. Eventual player of the match Ella Claridge made 70 off 51 balls after she was dropped on 6, 19 and 27. USA needed 30 off three overs before the dam broke in the 18th with Claridge striking three boundaries in a 17-run over that put USA in control after they were behind the eight-ball having needed 79 off the last eight overs. It was a six from Claridge that was dropped over the rope at wide long-on in the 13th that started to shift momentum USA's way and they proceeded to collect 9, 10, 11, and 12 runs off the ensuing four overs to keep the chase from getting out of hand before finally going ahead of the required rate in the fateful 18th over.

At the end of the day, a win is a win and this is USA's first at the Women's T20 World Cup Qualifier since they beat Namibia in the 7th place match in 2019. USA now has two days off before they take on Ireland in their next match on Thursday. Ireland is coming off a 41-run win over Papua New Guinea in their opening match before having a bye in today's slate of fixtures.

I love this photo of USA Women's player Ritu Singh because it depicts the do-anything attitude and approach USA has towards doing what it takes to win on this tour. USA needed 11 off the final 13 balls to beat Nepal, and the match was pretty much in the bag. Chetna Pagydyala was in the 50s already and wasn't going to be stopped.

Yet Ritu Singh is pushing for tight singles and diving to make her ground to complete a run like it's the final ball of a World Cup Final. And today was just a warm-up match. I've covered a lot of USA Women's matches over the last decade and Ritu Singh is the one player who can relied upon every single match to come off the field needing to throw her uniform straight into the washing machine. She throws her body around diving and sliding to save runs along the boundary in the field, and never hesitates to go full extension with a dive to make an extra run between the wickets. She's willing to sacrifice herself for the team. Each time she puts in one of her many dives, she just dusts herself off and gets back up to be ready for the next time it's required. A true team player.

USA's players have never been short of effort, but now that effort is beginning to be matched by talent and results. It's great to see somebody who hustles from start to finish and has a desperate will to win finally get results in a positive way. When I asked Ritu on camera after today's win why she is so desperate to win that she's willing to put in dives to do anything to help USA win, she matter of factly said, "I wouldn't say it's being desperate to win, I'd say it's practicing to win."
