The 38th annual Tennis in the Streets event was a full-circle moment for Elijah Jennings, who spent the day volunteering at the very spot he first played tennis back in 2009.

Jennings was first introduced to tennis during a Kuumba Academy Charter School field trip to Rodney Square.

That initial spark at Tennis in the Streets, combined with the encouragement of his grandfather, began his tennis journey, playing for Christiana High School and Waynesburg University. Jennings is now a working professional at JPMorgan Chase, recently participating in a tennis collaboration event with the firm and the USTA Delaware District. He returned to Tennis in the Streets as a volunteer to mentor the next generation of players at the same clinic that shaped his own life 17 years ago.

He was joined by approximately 400 city youth in grades 5-8 who gathered to celebrate National Tennis Month through this long-standing Wilmington tradition.

Co-hosted by the USTA Delaware District and the City of Wilmington Department of Parks and Recreation, the event provided local students with free clinics, food, and entertainment. For volunteers like Jennings, the event is a powerful reminder of the power of the tennis community and the relationships forged along the way.

For Sherry Chen, tennis began in 2018 at the 2.5 level, where competitive USTA matches provided a quick ‘reality check’ that sparked a drive to improve. When she moved to the Main Line in 2019, she struggled to find a team. Instead of waiting for an invitation, she decided to build her own community, captaining everything from mixed doubles to Tri-Level competition.

Chen’s ultimate goal was to foster inclusivity on and off the court.

“My goal has always been to build a bridge between cultures,” she said. “My teams are diverse, and I welcome players from all backgrounds. To me, the best team spirit comes from a mix of different perspectives united by a shared love for the game.”

That philosophy led her 3.5 team to Nationals in 2024. For Chen, tennis is simply the hook and the culture is the glue. Rooted in the academic rigor of Beijing’s Tsinghua University, she maintains a ‘high-performance, high-comfort’ balance. She organizes regular practices to keep her players sharp, but it is the transition from the court to a shared table for post-match meals where the real team bonding happens, turning teammates into lifelong friends.

And that’s a wrap on the 38th annual Tennis in the Streets in Wilmington, Delaware 🎾

This initiative has introduced tennis to tens of thousands of kids in the city of Wilmington over the past 38 years. The free event provides a morning of tennis, food and other activities for kids from local schools and is one of the many great efforts and accomplishments of the Delaware District and its volunteers. We even got a special appearance by the Delaware Blue Coats mascot, Coaty.

Thank you to everyone who continues to make this unique downtown celebration such a success and for helping introduce the game of tennis to the next generation!

It was a powerhouse weekend for wheelchair tennis at RiverWinds Golf & Tennis Club! We are so grateful for the collaboration that made these events possible.

The Katie’s Komets Wheelchair Basketball Team joined forces with USTA Middle States and the Jefferson Moss-Magee Wheelchair Tennis Team for a fantastic afternoon of free tennis on Saturday, April 25. Athletes enjoyed on-court games, a player Q&A, and even took home new racquets and gear! A special thank you to Beth Cooke, Nancy Wilkins and Middle States Wheelchair Tennis Development Team members Greg Scott, Amanda Parezo, Jack Keller and Sergei Ivanov for bringing this vision to life.

On Sunday, the action continued as the Jefferson Moss-Magee team hosted the JTCC (Junior Tennis Champions Center) for round two of our crossover series! After the Magee team traveled down to College Park for their first meeting, they were happy to host the JTCC crew on their home courts this time.

Thank you to all the volunteers, parents and players who spent their weekend on the court with us. Happy National Tennis Month and 50th Anniversary of Wheelchair Tennis ♿️🎾
