Meet Charlie, a 12 year old Thoroughbred gelding who has just arrived at Castleton Ranch. Charlie was placed into training by his former owner in the hope that he may be able to become a jumper, however that did not work out and it was discovered that he had a kissing spine. This would certainly have been painful if he was being asked to jump. Charlies owner decided it would be best to have him euthanized as he could not do what was expected of him and it was thought that he would not have had a good life anyway. Luckily for Charlie, the owner of the training ranch called Castleton and told us of Charlies plight. Despite having high numbers to care for already, we just could not let Charlie be euthanized needlessly and we immediately agreed to bring Charlie to our sanctuary. Unfortunately, Charlie had to wait around 4 months until we had an appropriate place for him. In the meantime, Castleton took over all of the responsibility for Charlie, by ensuring that he wanted for nothing in terms of board, great food, veterinary and farrier until we could get him home, and here he is.
Charlie will do just fine. Whilst a kissing spine can be very painful and become worse with work, he will have a great life here just being a horse. He will have regular farrier work to help with his kissing spine issue but we do not foresee any problems going forward. Another happy horse.
