👀 Speaker reveal #2 for Latinos in Education — two more to know:

Karla Valdez → Workshop Speaker, Spanish Teacher. Immigrated to the U.S. at age 10, first in her family to graduate college (B.A. Spanish, Sacramento State; M.A. Educational Technology). Now she teaches the language and the lesson: your story is an asset, not an obstacle.

Julian Cuevas → Speaker, Founder & Principal of Third Space Advisory Group, President of the Dixon Unified School District Board of Education. Son of Mexican immigrants turning a decade of policy and advocacy experience into real systems change across housing, climate, and education.

A classroom and a boardroom — proof that our community is shaping education from every seat in the room.

👋 Kicking things off — our first speaker reveals for Latinos in Education!

José Rivas, MPA, EdD → Workshop Speaker, Founder of RivasWorks LLC & FirstGen Connect. Once a migrant farm worker, now a higher ed leader (Ed.D. USC, MPA CSU Hayward, B.A. UC Berkeley) opening doors nationwide for first-gen students and professionals.

Saúl Ramírez → Workshop Speaker, Financial Aid Director at Cal Poly Maritime Academy. 18+ years helping students and families navigate federal, state, and CSU financial aid — because a "yes" to college shouldn't hinge on knowing the right paperwork.

From the fields to the front of the room, and from red tape to real access — this is what it looks like when our community builds its own ladders.

👋 ¡Arrancamos! Nuestros primeros speakers para Latinos en la Educación

José Rivas, MPA, EdD → Conferencista de Taller, Fundador de RivasWorks LLC y FirstGen Connect. Ex trabajador migrante del campo, hoy líder en educación superior (Ed.D. USC, MPA CSU Hayward, B.A. UC Berkeley) abriendo puertas a estudiantes de primera generación.

Saúl Ramírez → Conferencista de Taller, Director de Ayuda Financiera en Cal Poly Maritime Academy. Más de 18 años ayudando a familias a navegar la ayuda financiera federal, estatal y del sistema CSU — porque ir a la universidad no debería depender de saber llenar el papeleo correcto.

Del campo al frente del salón, y del papeleo al acceso real — así se ve cuando nuestra comunidad construye sus propias escaleras.

🚍 Transportation is about more than getting from one place to another—it connects people to opportunity.

As part of the 8 Poderosas Leadership & Mentorship Program, participants explored how transportation systems influence access to education, employment, healthcare, housing, and community life.

This session was facilitated by Marisela Barbosa, Founder of The Time is YA! and Executive Director of The Time is YA Network, who guided participants through the transportation systems that shape our communities. Together, they examined how transportation decisions are made, the organizations involved in planning and funding mobility, and why civic engagement plays a critical role in creating more equitable transportation solutions.

By understanding how these systems work, our Poderosas are building the knowledge, confidence, and leadership skills needed to advocate for positive change in their communities.

"When we understand the systems around us, we gain the power to help shape them."
— Marisela Barbosa-Cortez

Thank you to our Poderosas for their curiosity, thoughtful discussions, and commitment to becoming the next generation of community leaders.
