WUSUP FB FAM?? Today is the 6 year anniversary of the MLKHP, and looking back, we’ve accomplished a lot in the last 6 years. This is a somewhat bittersweet announcement though. First and foremost we want to say thank you to everyone who has supported us over the years. It’s been a minute since we’ve posted, but in very low key fashion, we’ve been putting in work. To date the project has served 29,894 meals, including sack lunches, hot and cold breakfast, and family packs, which are grocery boxes. In addition we have provided clothing, toiletries, pet food and products, books, Bombas Socks, and special requests items such as bikes and even car parts in a couple of cases. Nonetheless, the project is at a serious crossroads. Time and money are tight!
Due in large part to the disruption caused by the pandemic and subsequent issues such as the cost of goods, operational expenses, the fentanyl crisis, and many others have also caused us to shift direction. The pandemic also caused me to make a career that is very demanding. The mobile service model we were using was effective, and it was intended to be the secondary service, as we were working hard to get into a brick and mortar location. We had programs in place ready to make the transition, however broken promises made by shape shifting politicians made us put that on the back burner. Also, it should be noted that it was becoming very clear that there were a lot of groups serving, so if we changed direction it wouldn’t be too disruptive to our recipients and target demographic. So we opted to go to a scheduled delivery model which was made available to everyone who signed up for our MLK FAMILY & FRIENDS PROGRAM. It too would prove to be successful initially, but circumstances including multiple deaths, also slowed down to a crawl. Nonetheless we were still working on ways to effectively serve the community, so I decided to reach out to a friend for help.
In March of this year I reached out to my friend Jameelah to see if she knew a family that would be willing to be a working test model for a new family program I had in mind. Same services, but more tailored to the family’s specific needs. After a few weeks she introduce me to Franki! We met at Jameelah’s place to touch base and set the terms, and we have been working with her ever since.
Every Sunday I deliver 25 sack lunches and all that goes with them to the family. In addition to food and basic needs we also provide financial assistance with some of their unexpected emergency expenses. In an effort not to use MLK funds entirely, I sat with a donor who I agreed to be a sponsor for this family’s needs above and beyond what the project provides. Well thankfully we still have some committed donors and along with the sponsor we have made it this far, but by months end it will be over if we don’t receive more financial help. Depending on what happens this month finding wise, it’s our hope to be on track to help more families starting in January. Regardless of what happens, it’s been a a joy and I will always stand committed to our mission statement,
