Morganton Humanist Alliance

Morganton Humanist Alliance A secular support and community action group for those who value compassion, rationality, and critical thinking.

Humanism is a progressive philosophy of life that, without supernaturalism, affirms our ability and responsibility to lead ethical lives of personal fulfillment that aspire to the greater good of humanity. The lifestance of Humanism—guided by reason, inspired by compassion, and informed by experience—encourages us to live life well and fully. It evolved through the ages and continues to develop th

rough the efforts of thoughtful people who recognize that values and ideals, however carefully wrought, are subject to change as our knowledge and understandings advance. The Morganton Humanist Alliance holds a general information meeting the first Thursday of every month at 7 PM at the Morganton Community House, which is open to anyone. We also have a 2nd Thursday Gathering where we all meet socially (usually at a local haunt) to engage in discourse and general fellowship. We host a number of family and adult outings throughout the year.

**Currently we have suspended our monthly meetings and indoor socials. We are meeting in an outdoor "socially distant" format for our socials. Dates and times will be updated on both our page and our website.**

The Myth of Redemptive Violence

“Theologian Walter Wink writes about something he calls “the myth of redemptive violence” – present in the darkest corners of Christian theology but visible all over our culture and media. It’s the idea that we can purify the world with violence. That if the world’s righteous can pick the right enemies and target them with a brutal enough crusade, that the world can finally be made good and just. It animates the dark corners of the religious right, with their brutality towards immigrants and foreigners and trans kids, their glee at renaming the “Department of Defense” to the “Department of War.”

And humanism has always believed the opposite of that. We believe in Sagan’s call for recognizing nonviolence as necessary for our collective survival, in Vonnegut’s belief that “peace is a sacred thing,” in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – written by humanist Lester Mondale – that calls for everyone to enjoy “the right to life, liberty, and security of person.””

There’s nothing shameful about honoring your loved ones in your way.

Keep your chin up.

A century after a teacher went on trial for teaching evolution, the role of science in the classroom and in society remains in contention.

Good luck to everyone returning to school this fall! Like if you agree with the following:

I believe that teachers are vital to our youth and our society and they should be paid and equipped accordingly.

I believe that every student should have appropriate general education free of unwanted religious or doctrinal instruction.

I believe that all teachers, students, and staff should be safe and welcome at school.
