Thank you to Dr. Marc J. Philippon for kicking off SPRI Grand Rounds for the 2026–2027 academic year with his presentation, “Evolution of Hip Arthroscopy Over the Last 30 Years.”

Drawing from three decades at the forefront of hip arthroscopy, Dr. Philippon shared the evolution of surgical tools and techniques alongside lessons in patient care, leadership, research and building strong teams.

His presentation offered our fellows an invaluable perspective on how the field has advanced and the principles that continue to shape the future of hip preservation and sports medicine.

As Chairman of Steadman Philippon Research Institute, Managing Partner of The Steadman Clinic and Co-Director of SPRI’s ACGME-accredited Sports Medicine Fellowship Program, Dr. Philippon plays an integral role in educating and mentoring the next generation of orthopaedic sports medicine surgeons.

We are grateful for the opportunity to learn from his experience and leadership as we begin another academic year of research, education and collaboration at SPRI.

If you are currently experiencing osteoarthritis-related pain in your knee, you may be eligible to participate in a clinical trial studying how an 8-week home-based training program using devices designed to improve muscle strength and coordination might improve your symptoms and function.

WHAT YOU WOULD DO FOR THE STUDY:
- You would come to the Steadman Philippon Research Institute (SPRI) in Vail for a knee X-ray and to assess your current level of pain and function.
- You would be taught how to use one of two training devices designed to improve the strength and coordination of your knee muscles.
- You would be provided with the training device, which you will take home with you and use for 10 minutes, three times per week for 8 weeks.
- You will return to SPRI after training is completed to repeat the pain and functional assessments.

YOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IF YOU*:
- Are between 40 and 85 years of age
- Have a history of painful knee osteoarthritis in one or both knees
- Are able to walk without assistive devices (cane, crutches, walker) at home and in community settings

YOU ARE NOT ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IF YOU*:
- Have recently had (or plan to have) knee surgery or injections
- Have a joint replacement in your painful knee
- Are unable to perform the study assessments, which include walking short distances and some basic movement activities

*Please note that the above listing is not comprehensive. You will be evaluated by the research team to determine if you meet all eligibility criteria to participate.

COMPENSATION: If you complete all study activities, you can receive up to $630.

SPRI’s Education and Public Outreach Committee (EPOC) is officially relaunching as SPRI Future Innovators (SPRI FI), a new name that reflects the spirit, vision and impact of SPRI’s youth education initiatives.

SPRI FI encompasses four core programs: 5th Grade Lab Tours, Middle School STEM Futures Day, High School Summer Scholars and High School Science Club. Additional outreach includes Junior Doctors Academy, Girls in STEM, science and career fairs, anatomy labs, surgery room tours, shadowing and mentorship, an alumni network and community collaborations.

Through these experiences, SPRI FI inspires Colorado youth to explore the possibilities of science, medicine and research while connecting students with opportunities available right here in Colorado’s mountain communities.

Based at SPRI’s Vail and Basalt campuses, these programs have reached more than 6,000 Colorado students across 12 counties through over a decade of programming, helping inspire the next generation of scientists, researchers, physicians and innovators.

Congratulations to former SPRI Visiting Scholar Dr. Rony-Orjit Dey Hazra on successfully defending his Habilitation thesis and reaching an important milestone in his academic career.

Dr. Dey Hazra’s research has advanced the understanding of joint-preserving surgery for proximal humeral fractures, with foundational work conducted during his time in Vail alongside Dr. Peter Millett at Steadman Philippon Research Institute and The Steadman Clinic.

His achievement reflects the lasting impact of international research collaboration at SPRI, bringing together researchers and physicians from around the world to advance orthopaedic research and patient care.

SPRI’s Golf Sports Medicine Program recently joined the Vail Veterans Program at the Grand Hyatt Vail for a session focused on the mental and mechanical aspects of putting.

Steve Atherton, PGA Master Professional and Director of SPRI’s Golf Sports Medicine Program, spoke with participants about the role both mindset and mechanics play on the putting green, sharing insights and techniques they can take into their own game.

SPRI is proud to welcome Dr. Michael O’Brien, Ph.D., BHSc, as the Institute’s first visiting research fellow through its fellowship program with the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Dr. O’Brien joins SPRI from Melbourne, Australia, where he is a physiotherapist and postdoctoral research fellow at La Trobe Sport and Exercise Medicine Research Centre, specializing in hip and groin pain and hip dysplasia in young adults.

During his three-week fellowship at SPRI, Dr. O’Brien will collaborate with SPRI researchers and The Steadman Clinic physicians on intervention development, postoperative hip rehabilitation, return-to-sport decision-making and collaborative research methodologies.

The fellowship is supported through the 2026 SPRI-Borgen IOC Research Centre Training and Career Development Travel Award Program, made possible by a generous gift from longtime SPRI supporter Bjorn Erik Borgen. The program supports research exchange and collaboration across the IOC Research Centres of Excellence network.

The 2026 EPOC Summer Scholars Program in Basalt brought together local high school students for a week of hands-on learning in sports medicine, orthopaedic research and healthcare innovation.

From biomechanics labs and hands-on experiments to observing live surgery and exploring careers in medicine, students gained firsthand experience alongside the scientists, physicians and healthcare professionals shaping the future of sports medicine.

Throughout the week, participants collaborated in teams and put their new knowledge to the test in a competition that challenged them to apply what they learned across each laboratory experience. Congratulations to this year's winning team, Hands Down, for taking home the top spot!

Thank you to all of the students, mentors and staff who made this year's Summer Scholars Program a success.
