Congratulations to Dr. Jonathon D. Backus on being named President-Elect of the Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Foundation!

Dr. Backus, a foot and ankle specialist at The Steadman Clinic and faculty member of the Foot and Ankle Fellowship program, will serve a two-year term as President-Elect before assuming the role of President for an additional two years.

With extensive experience in orthopaedic surgery, research and education, Dr. Backus brings valuable expertise and leadership to the Foundation, which supports advancements in foot and ankle care through research and education.

We are proud to recognize Dr. Backus for this well-deserved appointment and his continued contributions to the field of orthopaedics!

Congratulations to Dr. Joseph J. Ruzbarsky on being named Head Team Physician of the U.S. Snowboard Team by U.S. Ski & Snowboard!

Dr. Ruzbarsky, an orthopaedic surgeon at The Steadman Clinic and a graduate of SPRI’s Sports Medicine and Hip Preservation Fellowship programs, succeeds his longtime mentor, Dr. Thomas R. Hackett, who was recently appointed Chief Medical Officer of U.S. Ski & Snowboard.

From fellow to orthopaedic surgeon to Head Team Physician, Dr. Ruzbarsky’s journey reflects The Steadman Clinic and SPRI’s committment to developing the next generation of leaders in sports medicine. In his new role, he will help oversee the care of elite snowboard athletes competing at the highest levels, including the World Cup circuit and Olympic Games.

We are proud to celebrate this exciting milestone and look forward to Dr. Ruzbarsky’s continued contributions to athlete health, performance and the legacy of excellence established by Dr. J. Richard Steadman.

SPRI has been awarded a €16,951 research grant from AGA, the Society for Arthroscopy and Joint Surgery, Europe’s largest professional society for arthroscopy.

The funding will support a new study investigating how donor bone and cartilage can help restore shoulder stability following dislocations that result in bone loss. Using advanced robotic testing, researchers will evaluate how different bone grafting techniques can restore joint stability and potentially reduce the risk of recurrent dislocations.

Led by principal investigators Dr. Peter J. Millett and Dr. Matthew T. Provencher, this research aims to advance surgical techniques and improve treatment options for athletes and patients experiencing shoulder instability.

Special thanks to AGA visiting research scholars Dr. Lorenz Fritsch and Dr. Christian Schenk, along with SPRI biomedical engineer Alex Brady, for their contributions to this important research.

Thank you to Dr. Randy Viola, Hand, Wrist, Elbow & Orthopaedic Trauma Specialist at The Steadman Clinic, and Arthrex for an outstanding educational surgical skills lab for our Sports Medicine Fellows.

The hands-on UCL elbow lab provided our fellows with a valuable opportunity to strengthen their surgical skills and expand their understanding of elbow procedures in a practical, lab-based setting.

We are grateful to Dr. Viola and Arthrex for their continued commitment to advancing surgical education and providing meaningful hands-on learning opportunities for the next generation of sports medicine surgeons.

Congratulations to Thomas R. Hackett, M.D., on being named Chief Medical Officer of U.S. Ski & Snowboard!

Dr. Hackett, a complex knee and shoulder surgeon at The Steadman Clinic and sports medicine faculty at Steadman Philippon Research Institute, has served as head physician for the U.S. Snowboard Team for more than two decades across five Olympic cycles.

In his new role, Dr. Hackett will oversee medical strategy and operations across all U.S. Ski & Snowboard disciplines, including the coordination of team physicians, complex injury management and international medical operations as the organization prepares for the 2030 Olympic Winter Games in the French Alps.

The appointment continues a 50-year legacy of The Steadman Clinic and SPRI supporting elite winter sports athletes, beginning with Dr. J. Richard Steadman providing medical coverage at the 1976 Winter Games in Innsbruck.

Dr. Hackett will continue his full-time surgical practice at The Steadman Clinic and his ongoing involvement with SPRI while taking on this expanded leadership role.

Congratulations, Dr. Hackett, on this well-deserved appointment and continued commitment to advancing athlete care at the highest level!

It was a pleasure to welcome Captain Tom Chaby, U.S. Navy SEAL (Ret.), to SPRI for our Leadership Series and Grand Rounds.

Drawing on 26 years of experience building and leading teams in some of the most challenging environments around the world, Captain Chaby brings a unique perspective on leadership, team effectiveness and performance optimization.

Captain Chaby challenged our fellows, athletic training residents and research teams to think differently about leadership, handling pressure, resilience and what it takes to build effective teams.

We are grateful for his continued partnership with SPRI and the valuable perspective he brings to our community.

We were pleased to welcome back Rachel Frank, MD, Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Medical Director of the Joint Preservation Program at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, to SPRI for a day of education, collaboration and leadership.

Dr. Frank joined us for our Leadership Series, sharing the experiences and lessons that have shaped her journey, and presented Grand Rounds on “Knee Joint Preservation in 2026: What’s New, What Works, What’s Next.”

Dr. Marc J. Philippon will serve as a Course Co-Chair for the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) Hip Arthroscopy Masters Course on October 24 in Rosemont, Illinois.

As one of the specialty’s leading voices in hip arthroscopy, Dr. Philippon will join fellow Course Chairs Dr. J.W. Thomas Byrd and Dr. Benjamin G. Domb to share the surgical techniques, decision making and practical experience that have helped shape modern hip arthroscopy.

Designed for orthopaedic surgeons, fellows, residents and PAs, the hands-on course will explore advanced approaches to hip preservation and the treatment of athletes, including labral repair and reconstruction, capsular management, femoroacetabular impingement correction and more.

SPRI’s 22nd Annual Golf Classic brought our community together at Sanctuary Golf Course for another incredible year, raising more than $200,000 to support SPRI’s research and educational programs.

Over the last decade, the Golf Classic has raised nearly $2 million to help advance research, education and innovation in orthopaedics and sports medicine.

Thank you to everyone who joined us on the course, supported this year’s event and helped make the 22nd Annual Golf Classic such a success.

Thank you to Dr. Marc J. Philippon for kicking off SPRI Grand Rounds for the 2026–2027 academic year with his presentation, “Evolution of Hip Arthroscopy Over the Last 30 Years.”

Drawing from three decades at the forefront of hip arthroscopy, Dr. Philippon shared the evolution of surgical tools and techniques alongside lessons in patient care, leadership, research and building strong teams.

His presentation offered our fellows an invaluable perspective on how the field has advanced and the principles that continue to shape the future of hip preservation and sports medicine.

As Chairman of Steadman Philippon Research Institute, Managing Partner of The Steadman Clinic and Co-Director of SPRI’s ACGME-accredited Sports Medicine Fellowship Program, Dr. Philippon plays an integral role in educating and mentoring the next generation of orthopaedic sports medicine surgeons.

We are grateful for the opportunity to learn from his experience and leadership as we begin another academic year of research, education and collaboration at SPRI.
