Seven members of our community lost their lives yesterday in five tragic incidents.

Four were killed in separate murder-suicides.

One was killed in a separate shooting.

One died in a fire still under investigation.

One died in a fatal traffic crash.

Our officers were there for many of these victims in their final moments. Then they were there for the families left behind.

Holding someone’s hand as they die, consoling parents, spouses, children, and friends on the worst day of their lives is something our officers, firefighters, doctors, and nurses do every day.

As we remember these victims and pray for their loved ones, we should also remember the emotional toll these tragedies take on those who answer the call.

As we enjoy the liberties and time with family this Memorial Day weekend, let us first remember those heroes who are now with us only in spirit. Then let us remember the many men and women who do not get the weekend off but instead are serving right now on the front lines at home and abroad, keeping us safe in our homes and in our nation.
