Royal Correspondence from Chandler the Peacock 🦚

Today I was introduced to a new member of the estate.

Kizzy.
Kismet van het Bos.

A rather small, very enthusiastic Rottweiler gentleman who apparently felt that meeting me required an immediate and thorough inspection.

I allowed it.

One must be gracious with new arrivals.

I have determined that he is curious, energetic, and currently unaware that he is in the presence of royalty.

This can be corrected.

In time.

For now, I shall permit him to remain.

Today was a very busy day on the estate, and naturally, I was heavily involved in all operations.

First, the horses had their feet trimmed. I supervised to ensure everyone remained calm and that the work met acceptable standards.

Then we moved on to the willow trees.

The tall grass around our young saplings was mowed, the trees were trimmed up, deer protection was installed, and the fence was restored to prevent the goats from conducting their own unauthorized landscaping project.

At every stage, I was present.

Observing.

Inspecting.

Occasionally standing exactly where someone needed to work.

It is important for staff to know they are being watched.

Once all chores were completed and the estate was in satisfactory order, I received my dinner.

As is customary when one has spent the entire day working tirelessly.

There has been an unfortunate development involving the newest and smallest member of the estate.

Eris—the appropriately named goddess of chaos—has apparently overextended her relationship with gravity and is now refusing to put weight on her left hind leg.

Naturally, this has resulted in an immediate change of plans.

We are currently at Mayfair Vet Care, where The Keeper has taken her for an urgent evaluation to determine what exactly the little agent of chaos has managed to do to herself.

She is, of course, being appropriately dramatic about the entire situation.

I will be monitoring events closely.

After all, someone needs to make sure the goddess of chaos receives adequate supervision.

Although, given her track record, I suspect she may be the one supervising us.

There has been some unfortunate commentary regarding my current… lack of tail.

I prefer to call it a seasonal reduction.

Yes, the magnificent train has largely departed.

Yes, there is currently one rather questionable feather standing off by itself like it missed an important staff meeting.

And yes, I am still displaying.

Because a true royal does not wait for perfect conditions.

You display what you have.

You make it work.

You maintain standards.

So if the estate currently contains only one janky tail feather capable of participating in the presentation, then that feather shall receive the full benefit of my attention.

I may be temporarily short on feathers…

But never short on fabulous.

Feathers fade, but fabulous is forever. 🦚👑

Today The Keeper attempted to mow the field.

I attempted to assist.

Apparently, my definition of “assist” differs somewhat from hers.

She drove the large noisy machine.

I walked directly in front of it.

She changed direction.

I changed direction.

She went farther into the field.

So did I.

She proceeded all the way to the back.

Naturally, I followed.

At no point did I see any reason to allow her to perform this important estate maintenance without proper supervision.

She seemed to think I was “in the way.”

I prefer to think of myself as quality control.

Someone has to ensure the grass is being removed to appropriate standards.

And if that requires following The Keeper around the entire field while occasionally standing directly where she needs to go…

Well.

Royal oversight is not always convenient.

It appears an unexpected alliance has formed on the estate.

Julius, the orange gentleman who arrived looking as though life had thoroughly defeated him, has taken young Eris under his wing.

Metaphorically.

Cats, regrettably, do not possess wings.

The two can now be found racing about the property, wrestling, pouncing, and generally conducting themselves as though chaos were an Olympic event.

Which, given Eris is named after the goddess of chaos, seems entirely on brand.

Curiously, Noah and Naamah—the two cats The Keeper intentionally acquired—have elected to observe this partnership from a considerable distance.

Their expressions suggest they are quietly questioning every life choice that led them to this moment.

A wise strategy, if you ask me.

Julius seems delighted to have found a friend.

Eris seems delighted to have found an accomplice.

I, meanwhile, have accepted that order on this estate is now little more than an ambitious suggestion.

This evening, The Keeper ventured into the lower fields to shut off the flood irrigation.

Naturally, I maintained vocal communication from a respectable distance.

Some might call it “yelling.”

I prefer the term continuous situational updates.

It is fortunate I did.

For lurking among the floodwaters were not one…

Not two…

But three skunks.

Three.

As if one wasn’t sufficiently aromatic.

The Keeper managed to capture two of them on video before they wandered off into the evening, blissfully unaware of the paperwork they would have created had Ivo discovered them first.

I remained exactly where I belonged—well outside the blast radius.

Leadership is, after all, about recognizing hazards and allowing others to investigate them.

You’re welcome.

An unfortunate rumor has been circulating that I “don’t fly.”

Allow me to correct the record.

I can fly.

I simply choose to do so sparingly, as excessive effort is unbecoming of royalty.

This evening I elected to roost atop the gazebo—a location that offers an excellent view of the estate and, I must admit, rather superior accommodations.

The challenge came later.

Specifically…

The descent.

It had been some time since I had considered the finer points of dismounting from such an elevation, and the landing lacked the refinement I had envisioned.

Unfortunately, Ivo witnessed the entire affair.

The sight of a rapidly descending peacock appears to have activated every remaining puppy thought in his oversized head.

He gave chase.

With enthusiasm.

I believe he departed with a few souvenir feathers before The Keeper reminded him that peacocks are not, in fact, giant squeaky toys.

I escaped without injury.

My dignity, however, sustained measurable damage.

There will be no further questions regarding this incident.

It has become apparent that the dogs are, once again, in training.

Obedience. Protection. Much intensity. Questionable consistency.

After attending a sufficient number of these “workshops,” I have reached a conclusion:

They require supervision.

A spotter, if you will.

Someone with presence. Awareness. Standards.

Naturally, I have accepted the position.

You may notice me stepping in from time to time—offering guidance, issuing corrections, and ensuring that all participants remain aligned with expectations.

Are my interventions always requested?

No.

Are they always understood?

Also no.

Are they necessary?

Absolutely.

Excellence does not achieve itself.

You’re welcome.

A situation has developed.

One of the goslings hatched later than the others and, as a result, struggles to keep pace with the larger babies.

This is unfortunate.

What is even more unfortunate is that it has apparently decided that I am the solution.

Today I found myself being followed across the estate by a small yellow goose who seemed convinced that I was responsible for its continued success and well-being.

To be clear:

I am not its mother.

I am not a goose.

And babysitting is not listed anywhere in my official duties.

Yet every time I turned around…

There it was.

Following.

Peeping.

Existing directly behind me.

I suppose there are worse things than being trusted.

Still, I would appreciate it if the gosling would locate an actual goose at its earliest convenience.
