Round and round they go.

Sometimes for three seconds.

Sometimes long enough to make you wonder whether your dog has completely lost the plot.

Tail chasing can be totally normal, especially in puppies and playful dogs. A moving tail is basically a built-in toy, and some dogs discover very quickly that spinning after it is entertaining.

Excitement and boredom can play a role too.

A dog with extra energy may chase their tail because it gives them something to do. Some also learn that the behavior gets a big reaction from people, which can make it even more rewarding.

But not every spinning session is harmless.

If your dog suddenly starts chasing their tail constantly, biting at it, losing fur, injuring the skin, or seeming unable to stop, there may be something else going on. Fleas, allergies, a**l gland irritation, pain, neurological problems, or compulsive behavior can all trigger repeated tail chasing.

The pattern matters.

Dolly Parton never legally owned a dog in her later years, but that never stopped Billy the Kid, a French bulldog belonging to her longtime manager Danny Nozell, from becoming her self-declared "god-dog." Billy came into her life as a puppy in 2019 when Nozell brought him to the studio, and Dolly has said she simply claimed him on the spot. From there, Billy became the brand ambassador for Doggy Parton, her pet apparel line supporting Willa B. Farms Animal Rescue, and the star of three children's books she wrote about a music loving Frenchie chasing his Nashville dreams.

Her connection to dogs ran much deeper than one bulldog though. In the 1980s, she credited her Boston Terrier Popeye with pulling her back from a genuinely dark moment in her life, the sound of his paws on the stairs interrupting her at a moment she's described as suicidal. Following her death this week at age 80, these smaller relationships feel worth remembering alongside everything else she built, a woman who spent decades making people smile also made sure a small French bulldog knew, unmistakably, that he was adored.
