MARK YOUR CALENDARS:
“Bee Whisperer” Ken Warchol at the Quaker Meetinghouse

Join Ken Warchol and his beekeeping display for a look at these tiny but important creatures. Ken will speak at the Uxbridge Quaker Meetinghouse, (corner of Quaker Highway and Aldrich St) on Sunday, September 21st at 1PM.

Ken is concerned with the health of our bee colonies. While there are new regulations about pesticides in agriculture and new medications to control mites in hives, the decline of bees in some areas is alarming. Join Ken on Sunday, September 21 at 1PM as he whispers to the bees to lean their fascinating secrets.

“Bee Whisperer” Ken Warchol to be featured at the Quaker Meetinghouse

Did you know that nearly 80% of the vegetables, fruits and grains we eat rely on bees and other insects for pollination and maturity? The honeybee, whose future is in real danger, is a top pollinator of many food crops. Join Ken Warchol and his beekeeping display for a look at these tiny but important creatures. Ken will speak at the Uxbridge Quaker Meetinghouse, (corner of Quaker Highway and Aldrich St) on Sunday, September 21st at 1PM.

Ken’s family began keeping bees in their village in Poland as far back as 1840. Now a sixth-generation beekeeper, Ken continues the work that his father began as a 1947 immigrant to Northbridge. He has spent a lifetime understanding the world of bees and overseeing hives throughout the Blackstone Valley.

For many years, Ken was the state bee inspector in addition to holding a teaching job at the Northbridge Public Schools. He was charged with the health of hives from the Cape to the Berkshires. Ken has now “retired” and keeps only about 100 hives for the Northbridge honey farm that he and his wife, Deborah, work together.

Ken remains concerned with health of our bee colonies. While there are new regulations about pesticides in agriculture and new medications to control mites in hives, the decline of bees in some areas is alarming. Join Ken on Sunday, September 21 at 1PM as he whispers to the bees to lean their fascinating secrets.

TODAY 1-3 TOUR THE QUAKER MEETINGHOUSE
If you have never seen the inside of this historic structure, or learned of its history, you will have the opportunity to do both at the open house today from 1 to 3 P.M.
Architect Phillip Wheelock will explore the timber framed features of the building as well as its brick exterior construction. Learn how the Quaker world view and the simplicity of the people formed the design of the building. Climb up to the unique balcony with its sloping floors and ponder the intent of the builders and the puzzle they may have been attempting to solve. Observe how the original 1770 structure was changed in the early 1800s to accommodate the thriving Quaker community.

In honor of Father’s Day, we are profiling Seth Aldrich (1775-1865), Quaker father of two daughters and nine sons. Born in Uxbridge, Seth was the 6th son of Benjamin & Lydia (Twist) Aldrich. He married Auddary Coggeshall on December 2, 1801, in the Uxbridge Friends Meetinghouse. Their wedding was recorded in December 1801 in the Uxbridge Monthly Meeting of Friends. The entry lists 36 witnesses to the union, including members of the Aldrich, Gaskill, Shove, Penniman, Southwick families and Moses Farnum.

The children of Seth and Audrey are: Anna Sibley (1802-1889), Benjamin (1804-1812), Christopher (1806-1887), Abel (1808-1810), Benjamin D. (1809-1854), Robert (1811-?), Rufus (1813-1835), Israel (1815-1889), Samuel (1821-1899) and Amanda Esten (1824-1861). The 1850 & 1860 censuses list his occupation as farmer and his real estate value at $1500. Seth died on March 28, 1865 and Auddary on November 7, 1855 and both are buried in the Friends Burying Ground.

Father's Day was first proposed in 1909 by Sonora Smart Dodd, of Spokane, Washington, inspired after listening to a Mother's Day sermon. Sonora admired her father, William J. Smart, a Civil War veteran who raised her and her siblings alone after her mother died. Originally, the date was June 19th, but in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson designated the third Sunday in June.

Happy Father’s Day from the Uxbridge Quaker Meeting House Association.
