During the Utica City School District Board of Education meeting on October 20, Brandon Long- serving as VP of High School for the Utica Teachers’ Association (UTA) - addressed the board during the designated UTA time. Despite the late hour, he still delivered his message. This is a longer video but still worth the watch.

The Utica Teachers’ Association stands united in support of the educators, students, and families affected by the heartbreaking tragedy in Bend, Oregon. Schools must always be safe, sacred spaces for learning and growth. To our fellow union members, parents, and community members in Oregon—we see you, we hold you in our hearts, and we stand shoulder to shoulder with you during this dark time.

A school should be a place for learning, friendship, discovery, and growth.

Yesterday, in Bend, Oregon, that sense of safety was shattered.

Students and teachers deserve so much better than lockdowns, fear, and trauma becoming part of the school experience.

Our hearts are with everyone affected, and we're exhausted by the fact that this keeps happening.

Every child. Every educator. Every school community. Safe should be the expectation, not the exception.

There will be a Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, October 20 at 6:30 PM. Public comment will take place during the regular meeting this month. If you plan to speak, please arrive early to sign up.
