Grounded in the NAACP's commitment to participation, mobilization, and advocacy, the session challenges attendees to think beyond Election Day and explore how Black women can keep shaping public policy, community priorities, and the future of democracy.

This town hall moves the conversation from participation to power. For generations, Black women have been among the nation's most reliable voters, organizers, advocates, and defenders of democracy. We know Black women vote. The more important question is what Black women should demand from candidates, institutions, and democracy itself.

🙌🏾 A wonderful night of celebration 🙌🏾

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of attending the NAACP New York State Conference's 90th Anniversary Gala, themed "Generations of Justice." This event celebrated 90 years of work that the NAACP NYS Conference has done, recognized the legacy that the conference's historical leaders laid for us, and called on us to remember & strengthen this legacy in the generations to come. Our Vice President, Aaron Woodman, attended this event on behalf of our branch.

This gala featured many prominent guest speakers - such as NYS leaders, NAACP state & national leaders, artists, and many more - where all of them congratulated the state conference for their work, gave some encouragement to us to keep advocating for our communities, and expressed hope in us to lead future generations of changemakers.

This gala handed out awards to 4 changemakers, featured opportunities to have professional headshots, featured a networking reception, had lots of singing and a band play music for us, and introduced the Legacy Vault to begin collecting records of the NYS branches' advocacy work so the next generations of changemakers decades from now can see the legacy we are created now and then.

As a branch part of this state conference, we are so proud to have been present at this gala event and celebrate with other NAACP members across New York State & partners of all the work we are doing in New York State. Congratulations to the NAACP NYS Conference for 90 years of service.

📣2026 Freedom Fund Dinner - Honoree Spotlight
Congratulations to Indivisible Mohawk Valley!

Indivisible Mohawk Valley is in its 10th year as a grassroots, pro-democracy, pro-social justice political action group. Over the past decade, its work has focused on mobilizing and organizing people in the community to become active in electoral and issue politics. Through direct voter contact, IMV has played a notable role in turning voters out to the polls and holding elected officials accountable.

The organization has partnered with a wide range of civil and human rights groups and labor unions around shared values and collaborative actions in the struggles for reproductive freedom, quality public education, affordable childcare, housing, health care for all, mitigation of the climate crisis, voting rights, an end to gun violence, and human rights and dignity for all people regardless of national origin, race, gender or immigration status.

IMV's mottos include: "Democracy is not a spectator sport," and, "We make political action local, bite-sized, and fun."

Today, we had the pleasure of attending a presentation at Mohawk Valley Community College, where we listened to author Lindsey Cormack about how we can use the values of citizenship to increase civic engagement in our community. This event was organized by the Oneida County Yourh Services Council and the League of Women Voters of Utica - Rome Metro Chapter.

Lindsey explained the importance of having a mindset that civics is a method for improving our society and getting people involved. She explained it starts with how we discuss issues with people and how we need to be open-minded with understanding where each of us are coming from. She explained how we need to give more value in teaching civics in society, especially so the youth have extensive time with learning about how it works and how they can practice it in their daily lives. When we learn more about civics, we become active participants in society instead of spectors. This means we are using the power we have to connect with folks and collaborate on making positive change in society.

We appreciate being present to listen to Lindsey's presentation and learning some more ways we can be more civically engaged in the community.

📣2026 Freedom Fund Dinner - Honoree Spotlight
Congratulations to Citizen Action of New York - Central New York Chapter!

Citizen Action of New York is a grassroots membership organization, comprised of eight chapters across the state, taking on big issues that are at the center of transforming society. The Central New York chapter, located at 500 Plant Street, advocates for both Utica and Syracuse.

Historically, the local chapter has focused much of its work on housing, childcare, education, and elections. Its victories have included winning a rent freeze during the 2020 pandemic, gaining more funding for Utica schools via Foundation Aid, and flipping congressional district NY-22 for Rep. John Mannion (D) in 2024. In the past year its endorsed candidates have won historic elections, including the election of the first Black mayor of Syracuse, Sharon Owens, and Mo Brown’s unseating of a 28-year incumbent in the NYS Assembly. It continues to advocate for universal childcare, affordable housing, and taxing the rich to fund New York. The organization is currently pushing for the passing of Good Cause Eviction in Utica.
