has always been both a declaration and a demand.

A declaration that LGBTQIA+ lives are worthy of joy, dignity, and respect. A demand that the systems around us rise to meet that truth.

This month, we celebrate the resilience of a community that has never stopped pushing for a more just world, and we recommit to that push alongside you.

Equity isn't a destination for some. It's a future we must build together, for everyone.

The NAACP New York State Conference debuted "Black New York Forward," a multi-year, statewide strategy to build durable Black political and economic power across New York State. This means:

✅ Growing statewide NAACP membership to 25,000
✅ A unified rally around key voter mobilization points between now and 2031
✅ Strengthening our narrative power to reclaim our history, teach our truth, and build collective understanding
✅ Develop and launch a Power Map to highlight where Black political power is being left on the table

We'll be joining future meetings to see how the Oneida County Branch can help bring this to fruition on the local level. Stay tuned!

Today, we had the pleasure of attending our sister NAACP branch's Freedom Fund Dinner event. The Syracuse/Onondaga Naacp hosted their 46th Annual Freedom Fund Dinner at the Oncenter, where their theme was "Freedom in Our Time: Defending Democracy & Securing Voter Rights."

This theme recognized the attack we are seeing on our voting rights and how we must keep fighting to ensure people's voices are being heard.

Keynote speaker Mayor of Syracuse Sharon F. Owens gave an empowering call to action for us to not let the voting restrictions stop us from using our political voices and how we must support each other in ensuring people have a plan to vote. That includes registering to vote, casting a ballot, and helping other people around you vote.

Not only did we come here to eat food and connect with people, but also left empowered and motivated to keep the civic work going.

Thank you to the NAACP Syracuse/Onondaga County Branch for the invitation. We are proud to support our sister NAACP branches!

⭐️ Educating and empowering the youth about the school board ⭐️

Today, we want to highlight our Vice President, Aaron Woodman, for a presentation he did at Rebuilding The Village, Inc, where he spoke to their students about what the school board is, why it is important, and how to get involved in the school board.

Aaron started the presentation by explaining what civic engagement is and why it is important. He laid the foundation that being civically engaged is about working together to have positive change, using your voice to speak up and speak out, and networking with civic leaders. This is important for having an evolving society and not having a static society, and we need to take a seat at the table to make our voices heard to decision-makers.

Aaron explained what a board of an organization is, their core duties, the types of boards, and how boards are structured. Aaron used this foundation to help the students better understand how all boards typically function. For school boards, they operate as a board, but they provide oversight on a school district level.

Aaron broke down what a school board and superintendent can and can't do.

He explained how school board members in the Utica City School District get chosen and how candidates can run for school board.

Aaron explained when & where the school board meets, as well as how these meetings are structured.

This presentation is important for increasing the students' knowledge about the school board, how the school board affects their lives, and why it is important to get to know their school board since it is for everyone in the community. Thank you so much to Rebuilding the Village for inviting Aaron to give his school board presentation.

We're giving a shout-out to our Communications Committee Chair Kira Maddox, who was named this year's Best Advisor by the Student Government Association at Utica University!

Alongside her role as Director of Community, Belonging, and Engagement, Kira serves as staff advisor to the Black Student Union and Women in a New Direction, a co-advisor of the K. Della Ferguson Women's Resource Center, and a close supporter of the International Student Union. In their remarks, Student Government leadership recognized her not just as an advisor to her organizations but also as a go-to supporter for students across campus.

We look forward to continuing to work with Kira to leverage NAACP partnerships with our local budding professionals!

An estimated one in seven, or about 14%, of 10 to 19-year-olds experience mental health conditions, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), yet these remain largely unrecognized and untreated. But next week, the NAACP is giving youth, educators, parents, community leaders, and advocates who serve on the front lines the tools to help fight this crisis with "The Wellness Blueprint: A Practical Guide to Supporting Youth Mental Health."

This session provides a practical roadmap for shifting from crisis response to holistic prevention. Participants will gain accessible tools and strategies to strengthen youth mental well‑being across schools, homes, and communities.
