The Ready for the Next Alarm – Central New York Fire Department Steps Challenge is officially accepting registrations!

From August 1–31, 2026, firefighters, fire police, auxiliary and support members, inactive members, and family members from departments across Central New York will compete in a month-long challenge focused on health, wellness, camaraderie, and friendly competition.

Every step you take helps your department climb the leaderboard. Whether you’re on the fireground, at the station, or simply out for a walk, every step counts!

🏆 Challenge Highlights:

* 👟 Track your daily steps throughout August
* 🚒 Represent your fire department with pride
* 🤝 Build teamwork and healthier habits
* 🏅 Compete for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place Department Awards

Our committee would like to take this time to say congratulations to Howard Rieger and all his accomplishments! Howard has always been a great supporter of our event as well as a participant when he use to live in NY! Keep up the great work Howard!

Every other month, the NFFF would like to recognize some of the 250+ volunteer advocates we have in the United States as part of our Advocate Spotlight.
This month's nominee is Fire Inspector Howard Rieger, a 28-year veteran of the fire service. He began his career as a volunteer Firefighter with the Carthage Fire Department in Upstate NY. He got hired as a DoW Firefighter in 2011 at Fort Drum, NY and is currently working as a Fire Inspector with the US Navy at NAS Jacksonville in Florida.
"The NFFF Advocacy program has a special place in my heart. As the State of Florida Lead Advocate, I can see the impact that the foundation and the Advocacy is doing. Firefighters lives are being saved! One thing I talk to my Advocates about is the NFFF Memorial Weekend. I have been a Family Es**rt since 2018, and being an advocate brings home why we do what we do!"
Howard, thank you for all that you do for the firefighters in your state and throughout the country.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of 9/11! To always fulfill the promise to ... on September 12, 2026 the CNY Memorial Stair Climb will hold it's annual event. Remembering the 343 firefighters, 70 law enforcement officers, and 9 EMTs who made the ultimate sacrifice on 9/11 is not something we can do alone.

This climb is not a race — it is a tribute.

Our event is part of a bigger group, and one of those events particularly stands out today in our thoughts. Today marks the anniversary of the Charleston 9. Normally, we would have a contingent down there to support them during this time. Even though we can’t be there this year, we extend our support to those who still remember this day like it was yesterday! Days will never get easier, we just learn how to bear with it a little better. Please take a moment today to remember the Charleston 9
