Save Caledonia Rainforest and Maroon Ridge

Save Caledonia Rainforest and Maroon Ridge The recreational use of Ham's Bay is in jeopardy. The DPNR is trying to re-zone plots # 1, 2, 7, 9 and 21.

Parts of this land was gifted to the USVI Government on Oct 14th, 1981 by the Estate of Eugene Brady to be kept in it's natural state.

This was posted by a Friend of the Caledonia Rainforest and Maroon Cliffs, thank you for putting it so elegantly.
Ray Bratcher: As planetary scientists predict the death of the oceans within our lifetimes, one of the leading experts on world sustainability, Joe Brewer,
writes: "It is now 2018 and the efforts of millions like me have failed to keep the global system from moving fully into a pattern of systemic ecological, economic, social, and political collapse. So I now transition into helping lay foundations for communities seeking to become resilient in the midst of such times as we are now in."

We may indeed have reached the tipping point of no return where saving the planet is no longer possible and we need to focus our energies on saving whatever remnants of humanity we can. Our island of St. Croix, which intrinsically forms an organic community set apart from the wider world, could be one of those "resilient" places. We all need to come together in love and go beyond ego and fear to make that happen.

Unfortunately, the short-sightedness of some, both native born and transplant, who would sacrifice forever both our cultural and ecological heritage for the sake of a few jobs that won't last ten years is a glaring example of why the world is in the state it is in.

I do not know about the rest of the world, nor about the eventual evolution of humanity world wide. Perhaps Eckhart Tolle is correct and there is taking place now a "flowering of human consciousness" in which more and more people become awakened, and transcend the selfish and shortsighted ego. Even he, however, says success is not guaranteed, victory not assured. We can't just sit idly by waiting on the evolution of consciousness to fix everything. We must do the work.

This I do know: it is the destiny of St. Croix to show the rest of the world how it is done! Whether or not we fulfill that destiny, is ENTIRELY up to US.

Good morning everyone, I can't tell you how many people I ask "Why don't you go West to the beaches anymore". The reply, always the same "We can't drive our car on those roads". Those roads where destroyed by over weight trucks traveling from the quarry. This s a great time to reach out and let your Senators and prospective Senators know that we don't want our wonderful Caledonia RainForest and Maroon Cliffs to continue to be assaulted by HEAVY INDUSTRY. Please email them with you objections. The large trucks have ruined the roads on the West, especially Highway 63. This has to stop.

I hope the realtor of this property will disclose information about the aggregate quarry, an active growing business right next door. Maybe the quarry owner or "manager" would like to purchase this and live right next door. A quarry that plans on adding cement and asphalt to its production yet it hasn't been able to meet the environmental requirements. As the new owner of the land that the quarry sits on told us, many things were not disclosed when he purchased those plots.

This is a very moving article, once again, we simply can not let the Senators vote to ruin this area by rezoning it HEAVY INDUSTRY.

The rezoning of Hamms Bay, Caledonia Gut and Maroon cliffs must be stopped. Once a rezoning is granted, the property owner is under no obligation to follow through with the plan he presented to the Virgin Islands Legislature — which approves all rezoning’s in the territory — when asking for the zoning change. With each rezoning, there comes between 150 and 250 new uses. You could say you wanted a rezoning to B1 to put in a convenience market, but with that zoning designation, you could also put in a bar.
A person who wants to make more money can tell any story they want about what they will do with the land after it’s rezoned, but then they can just sell it and the person who buys the land can make use of any of those hundreds of things made possible by the rezoning.
Everybody buys their property knowing the zoning of the surrounding neighborhood. The only time rezoning is appropriate is if everybody in the neighborhood decides there should be a new deal, and that means everybody. In the case of this property not ONE SINGLE OWNER in all of Frederiksted is in agreement.

I hiked the Caledonia Gut on Friday, the flora and fauna are recovering. It was a huge relief to see we can still save this area from demise. Please let DPNR know this is not acceptable to rezone this area that was SUPPOSED TO BE R-1 IN in perpetuity.
