📢With worsening drought conditions across the state and low relative humidity, State Forester Rick Oates has issued a statewide Fire Alert effective immediately.

Over the past weekend, 50 wildfires burned more than 2,300 acres of forestland across the state. This includes a 500-acre wildfire in Mobile County, one for 412 acres in Coosa County, one for 382 acres in Choctaw County, one for 260 acres in Washington County, and another one for 105 acres in Escambia County.

In the last 30 days, 387 wildfires have burned approximately 15,850 acres of forestland across the state.

“With no measurable rain in sight, the continued extremely dry conditions create dangerous wildfire behavior,” said Oates. “These conditions create the potential for fires to escape easily and spread rapidly, taking longer and more of the agency’s firefighting resources to contain. Fast-moving wildfires not only destroy property and forests but also threaten the lives of citizens and endanger firefighters.”

This Fire Alert will remain in effect until rescinded by the State Forester, at least through Monday, April 20. Conditions will be reevaluated at that time. Permits for outdoor burning will be restricted only to Certified Prescribed Burn Managers. Anyone who burns a field, grassland, or woodland without a burn permit may be subject to prosecution for committing a Class B misdemeanor.

Forecasters are more confident Monroe County will see frozen precipitation starting Tuesday. Timing of the beginning of the snow is still up in the air, but it will definitely last well into nightfall Tuesday. Couple that with extremely cold air starting tonight, and we will most assuredly experience treacherous road conditions. Plans are being made now to mitigate those conditions, but I would prepare now for staying a few days at home until conditions improve in Monroe County. Stay tuned!

Confidence is growing for a winter storm event next week. Y’all be careful out there! Only travel if it is absolutely necessary, it doesn’t matter what kind of vehicle you drive or what kind of experience you have. You’re better off safe than sorry. If the roads ice you will likely end up in a ditch until emergency responders can get to you!

Fire Alert Issued for Eight Counties in Southwest Alabama!
The Alabama Forestry Commission (AFC) has issued a Fire Alert for Baldwin, Choctaw, Clarke, Conecuh, Escambia, Mobile, Monroe, and Washington counties in the southwest region effective immediately. Gusty winds and low relative humidities are combining to create dangerous wildfire behavior.
“Windy conditions are expected today through Thursday with gusts approaching 30 mph, making fires very difficult to control,” said AFC Southwest Regional Forester Benji Elmore. “Even with any rain received in the next few days, windy conditions will still pose a threat. Fast moving wildfires not only destroy property and forests, but also threaten the lives of citizens and endanger firefighters.”
Both number and size of wildfires increased over the weekend. In the last four days, 168 wildfires have burned approximately 6,365 acres of forestland across the state, making up one-third of all the acres burned in Alabama since October 1 (the beginning of the agency’s fiscal year). More than half of that acreage occurred in those southwest counties, including a 1,210-acre wildfire in Baldwin County, one for 300 acres in Washington County, a 275-acre fire in Escambia County, one for 240 acres in Mobile County, and six others over 100 acres. Other parts of the state also experienced large wildfires in the last few days: a 400-acre fire in Sumter County, one for 200 acres in Chambers County, one for 165 acres in Randolph County, two fires over 100 acres in both Butler and Russell counties, as well as a 100-acre fire in Winston County. In the past 30 days, 327 wildfires have burned approximately 8,394 acres statewide.”
This Fire Alert will remain in effect until rescinded by the State Forester. Permits for outdoor burning in these specified counties will be restricted to Certified Prescribed Burn Managers only. Anyone who burns a field, grassland, or woodland without a burn permit may be subject to prosecution for committing a Class B misdemeanor. If burning with a permit in other parts of the state, the agency recommends using extreme caution and staying abreast of local weather updates because of the windy conditions.
