The Iowa General Assembly has passed a bill authorizing free tuition and fees for military veterans with a 100% disability who attend one of Iowa’s public universities.

Did you know that March 25 is National Medal of Honor Day? Over 3500 Medals of Honor (MoH), the highest medal for valor, have been awarded. Only one awarded to a woman, Dr. Mary Edwards Walker (Civil War). One Coast Guardsman, Doug Munro, awarded after Guadalcanal, WWII. In 1861, Iowa Senator James Grimes sponsored a Navy Medal of Honor. An Army medal followed in 1862, then an Air Force medal in 1956 (Air Force a separate service in 1947). The MoH is uniquely hung from a ribbon around the neck. Benefits include a tax-free pension with regular military retirement pay, burial at Arlington, free military air transport, and children automatically admitted to military academies. No amount of reward would be sufficient to honor recipients or honor enough the heroes awarded posthumously. Visit the Gold Star’s Medal of Honor Wall.
