Looking for a fall stroll this week? 🍂 Busey Woods and the Anita Purves Nature Center are two of C-U's best-kept secrets for soaking up autumn color — shaded trails, crunchy leaves, and a little nature center to pop into along the way. 🦉

And while you're out there, here's some history under your feet 🤓 Before it was Urbana, our city was known as "Big Grove" when it was first settled back in 1822 — named for the pocket of oak, hickory, and walnut forest that stood where downtown is today.

Urbana wasn't officially chartered until 1855, and just 16 years later, on October 9, 1871 (one day after the Great Chicago Fire), a massive fire tore through much of the city. Urbana rebuilt — and today it's home to everything from the University of Illinois to legendary film critic Roger Ebert's hometown roots. Pretty wild how much history is under our feet! 🌳

Next time you're wandering Busey Woods, remember: those woods are a living piece of the "Big Grove" Urbana grew up around. Take a stroll and see it for yourself! 🍁

Game day is finally here! 🧡💙 Homecoming trivia time! 🤓
Did you know Illinois is widely credited with hosting the very first college Homecoming celebration in the nation, back in 1910? Two students invited alumni back to campus for a football game against Michigan (a football-turned-tradition that colleges everywhere copied).
A few more fun UIUC facts while we're at it:
💡 The first practical visible-spectrum LED was developed by Nick Holonyak Jr., a UIUC alum and longtime professor
🌐 The Mosaic web browser — one of the first ever — was created right here at UIUC's National Center for Supercomputing Applications in 1993, paving the way for the modern internet
🎺 The Marching Illini date back to 1868, making them one of the oldest college marching bands in the country

Homecoming Week is in full swing at Illinois! 🧡💙

The orange-and-blue spirit is everywhere in C-U as we make our way through a week of Homecoming traditions and celebrations. From campus events to Friday night’s Homecoming Parade, there’s still plenty to look forward to!

The parade steps off at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, at Fourth Street and Kirby Avenue, and the week wraps up with Illinois’ 116th Homecoming game vs. Purdue on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 3:15 p.m. at Gies Memorial Stadium. 🏈

Whether you’re joining the festivities, tailgating at Grange Grove or simply soaking up the spirit around town, it’s a great week to be an Illini.
