Being part of a community means having opportunities to connect, grow, and participate in meaningful ways. With the right supports, individuals can build lives that are full, active, and connected. In the reflection below, a sibling shares their experience:
“Trevor Foster is my brother, a very active and loving member of our community. He is also an individual with a developmental disability. Born completely healthy, Trevor fell ill at just a couple of months old and contracted meningitis. The illness caused severe brain damage and swelling, which led to his diagnosis.
When I say this could happen to anyone, I mean that with my entire heart. Our family will forever be grateful for the guidance and support we received from the CCBDD when we didn’t know where to turn.
Today, my brother is a 31-year-old man. He loves people and socializing, bowling, good food, and games. He participates in programs like Aktion Club, People First, restaurant club, game nights, and many others.
Trevor is a great example of how successful individuals can be in their communities when they have the proper supports. Just last year, we were able to get Trevor living independently in his own home, working, and thriving in his community with my support as his independent provider.
These are all things that would not have been possible for him or many others without the right supports in place.” - Shelby Mossbarger
Stories like Trevor’s show how access to supports opens the door to independence, connection, and a strong presence in the community.
