Urbana Fire Department Responds House Fire 2010 Silver Court

At approximately 3:12 p.m., the Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 2010 Silver Court. One occupant was outside upon the fire department’s arrival. Urbana Police assisted and escorted the individual to Arrow Ambulance personnel for evaluation.

Firefighters immediately entered the residence to search for both fire extension and potential victims. Crews quickly located the seat of the fire near the kitchen area and initiated suppression operations. Additional firefighters established a water supply, ventilated the structure, and conducted a primary search to ensure no other occupants were inside.

The fire was brought under control within 10 minutes of arrival. Approximately 25 Urbana Fire Department personnel responded to the incident and remained on scene for just under two hours to complete overhaul operations and confirm that the fire was fully extinguished.

One individual was transported to the hospital by Arrow Ambulance. No firefighters were injured during the incident.

The Urbana Fire Department Investigation Team is currently investigating the cause of the fire, which remains undetermined at this time.

The Urbana Fire Department reminds residents that working smoke detectors provide early warning and save lives. Residents should test smoke alarms regularly and replace batteries at least every six months.

1204 Hill Street Working Incident - March 1, 2026

For the second time on Sunday, the Fire Department responded to a working structure fire within the city.

At approximately 10:16 p.m., crews were dispatched to 1204 Hill Street following reports of a structure fire. Engine 253, stationed on Bradley Avenue, arrived on scene within three minutes and encountered a heavily involved detached garage fire, with flames visible and threatening nearby structures.

Firefighters quickly deployed multiple hoselines and initiated a fire attack while working to protect surrounding exposures. Additional personnel established a sustained water supply, utilized power saws to access the structure, and safely isolated utilities to the structure.

Due to the rapid efforts of responding crews, the fire was brought under control within 15 minutes of arrival. Approximately 25 Urbana Fire Department personnel operated on scene for approximately one and a half hours conducting overhaul operations and ensuring all remaining hot spots were fully extinguished.
No firefighters were injured during the incident.

The Urbana Fire Department Investigation Team is currently investigating the cause of the fire, which remains undetermined at this time.

URBANA FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPONDS TO EARLY MORNING HOUSE FIRE

Firefighters quickly assisted six residents to safety early this morning after responding to what was initially reported as a downed power line.

At approximately 1:42 a.m., the Urbana Fire Department was dispatched to the 1700 block of Fairlawn Drive. Engine 252, stationed on Mumford Drive, arrived within three minutes and encountered heavy smoke coming from the attached garage of a single-story residence, confirming a working structure fire.

Firefighters immediately made entry into the home, located occupants inside, and assisted six residents to safety. One occupant confirmed all residents were out, allowing crews to continue interior fire suppression operations.

Crews advanced through the residence to the attached garage, located the fire, and brought it under control while additional firefighters established a water supply, ventilated the structure, and conducted a primary search. The fire was contained within 20 minutes.

Approximately 25 Urbana Fire Department personnel responded and remained on scene for more than two hours to complete overhaul operations and ensure the fire was fully extinguished. No injuries were reported; however, six residents were displaced as a result of the fire.

The Urbana Fire Department Investigation Team is investigating the cause of the fire, which remains undetermined.

At approximately 2:45 p.m., the Urbana Fire Department was dispatched to the 900 block of North Gregory Street following a report of a residential structure fire.

Engine 251, stationed on Vine Street, arrived on scene within four minutes and observed smoke coming from the front door of a single-story residence, confirming a working structure fire. Engine 251 made entry and initiated fire suppression operations.

Additional responding crews established a water supply, provided ventilation, and conducted a primary search of the structure. Firefighters completed a thorough search to confirm that no occupants were inside and performed overhaul operations to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.

Urbana Fire Department Responds to Structure Fire at 914 North Gregory Street

Approximately 25 personnel from the Urbana Fire Department and Champaign Fire Department responded to the incident. The fire was brought under control within 10 minutes, and crews remained on scene for approximately one hour. There were no injuries resulting in this fire.

The Urbana Fire Department Investigation Team is conducting a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the fire. The cause remains undetermined at this time and is pending further investigation.

The Urbana Fire Department responded to a total of 6,679 incidents in 2025. The majority of these, 57.67%, were medical-related. A detailed breakdown of incidents and their respective totals is provided in the graph.

Former years response totals are as follows:

INTERIM CHIEF APPOINTED AT SPECIAL CITY COUNCIL MEETING

The City of Urbana Mayor, DeShawn Williams, is pleased to announce Tal Prendergast has been appointed as Interim Fire Chief.

Prendergast’s appointment as Interim Fire Chief for the City of Urbana, Illinois, has a term ending on or before June 5, 2026. An Urbana native and Urbana High School graduate, Interim Fire Chief Prendergast holds a Bachelor of Science in Technical Systems Management from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Interim Fire Chief Prendergast's 29 years of experience in the fire service including 17 years with the Urbana Fire Department, 5 years with the Danville Fire Department, and 22 years with the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute. All locations are in Illinois.

This was approved by the Urbana City Council Special Meeting in a vote on December 8, 2025.
