Affirming care means support that respects who you are, honors your identity, and helps you feel safe, seen, and believed.

During Pride Month, we want to uplift LGBTQIA+ community members while also naming something important: affirming care is not seasonal. It should be present year-round.

If you’ve ever wondered whether your care feels affirming, try checking in with yourself:
Do I feel respected?
Do I feel safe being honest?
Do I feel believed?
Do I leave feeling supported?

You deserve care that affirms the whole you.

When your mind feels crowded, grounding can start with noticing instead of fighting every thought.

The “Thought Clouds” technique is a mindful imagery practice that can help create a little distance from overwhelming or repetitive thoughts. By imagining each thought placed on a passing cloud, you can practice letting it move through without judgment.

Like any skill, this may take practice. If it helps, return to your breath, your senses, and the reminder that you do not have to untangle every thought all at once.

RACES provides free advocacy, counseling, and education to survivors of sexual violence and their support people. Call 217-384-4444 for more information and crisis intervention.

AI companion chatbots are becoming more common, and they can shape how people experience connection, affirmation, and relationships.

These tools may feel comforting or easy to turn to, but it’s worth checking in with yourself about how they affect your expectations for closeness, conflict, and real-life support.

A few questions to sit with:
How often am I turning to AI instead of a real person?
Do I feel more connected after using it, or more isolated?
Have these chats changed what I expect from friends, partners, or conflict?

For Women’s Health Month, we’re highlighting how sexual violence prevention supports healthier relationships, safer communities, and long-term wellbeing. While this month invites conversation about women’s health, sexual violence affects people of all genders, and prevention benefits all of our communities.

Conversations about consent, boundaries, respect, and safety matter.
