A powerful work by artist Deborah Hughes ( she/her) is our Creative Spotlight this week.

As evocative of pain and anger as this collage may be, the process of creating it was no different according to Deb. She says, "I created the piece after taking some online courses on collage during the time when Liam Conejo Ramos and his father were sent to detention to be deported. I felt so angry and emotional that I needed to find a way to express my grief and frustrations. I happened to get a Consumer Reports magazine highlighting cars and current pricing with the pic of the money car. George Washington is the driver in the original picture, put I pasted a picture of a Texan cowboy from National Geographic with a Texas style flag over George. What's not visible in the photo are the edges which are lined with pictures of people of color with the words, Locked Up and Across America. I had originally tried to make a blue hat with the bunny ears and white pom poms, but I couldn't make it work with the rest of the piece. It took me a while to put it together as I would end up frustrated, sad and angry and had to take breaks."

Collage is an incredible art form that this store is an amazing source for, and we're honored to have been apart of Deb's sourcing for these materials. Deborah's work uses the colors of the nation's flag across the different medias and tells of the anger and pain of injustice under that banner. This incredible composed and constructed work is as beautiful as it is effective in its intent. We are so grateful to be able to share in its creation and further it's reach.
