BWIS is pleased to present our January , our first for 2025, Amanda Horn!

Amanda is an Educational Programs Administrator for the Office of Educational Programs at BNL. Some of her responsibilities include " the conception, design, development, implementation, and evaluation of the informal STEM education programs here at the lab."

Her day to day is dynamic: "[it] tends to fluctuate depending on our needs, but can include teaching in the Science Learning Center, leading exploration labs for secondary students, managing our teaching laboratory spaces, coordinating contests such as the Science Bowl, and administering teacher, and student programs."

On what drew her to science and Brookhaven National Laboratory, Amanda highlighted her love for learning, "I have always enjoyed learning about science. As a young child, I loved visiting science centers and museums and learning more about various scientific disciplines. I enjoyed studying Biology in college, but I quickly realized that while I really enjoyed learning about science, I didn’t necessarily want to do scientific research as a full-time job," and the lab's support for community engagement: "Working here at BNL has allowed me to indirectly support research by sharing it with local students and their teachers. It is very important that we continue to support the future scientists, engineers, and technicians and I love being a part of it."

Her message to women interested in and active in scientific careers is "take advantage of every opportunity that is presented to you. If there isn’t an opportunity, ask for it! You never know who is willing to support or work with you until you ask. You may find a new mentor, internship opportunity, or even a job! ". Amanda exemplified this through utilizing benefits available to laboratory employees, completing three graduate degrees, including her PhD.

Fellows will be hired in research staff scientist positions for four years, working closely with a Brookhaven sponsor to pursue their research interests. The Brookhaven Lab Chemistry Division and Brookhaven Women in Science have named Paris Watson, Michele Myong, and Edelmy Marin Bernardez as the recipients of the 2024 Joanna Fowler Award.

Xi Yang is an accelerator physicist at National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II). As one of the most advanced synchrotron light sources in the world, NSLS-II enables researchers from all the world to tackle the most important challenges in quantum materials, energy storage and conversion, condensed matter and materials physics, chemistry, life sciences, and more by offering extremely bright light, ranging from infrared to x-rays.

As an accelerator physicist, Xi is dividing her attention between maintaining the ideal experimental conditions for users and developing new insights into accelerator physics, engineering, and potential next-generation light sources.

Xi loves conducting studies on the electron and photon beams with her colleagues. They compare their experimental results to simulations so that they can continually enhance the performance of the accelerator. Furthermore, they model the various parts of the machine and develop machine controls to enhance the performance and stability of NSLS-II.

Her message to present/future women in science: "Believe in yourself!"

The Emerging Leaders Award honors the bright and dynamic young professionals under the age of 30 who demonstrate professional accomplishment and contribute to the Long Island community through public service. Congratulations Jenn! Well deserved!

Meet Qiong Wu, manager of the Electron-Ion Collider’s accelerator systems R&D.

She helped create a superconducting radiofrequency crab cavity for the high-luminosity LHC project at CERN. This unique equipment maximizes the collider’s luminosity at the point of particle collisions. The EIC will use similar yet even more sophisticated technology.
